Senior QB Tom Ramsey(280 yards 3 TD's) and RB Kevin Nelson(103 yards) did enough to hold off Pac-10 Rival Oregon State to get the 2nd Round Victory. Tom Ramsey was the story all day and was almost perfect going 11-11 at one point and only made one mistake on a interception to Dennis Weathersby. The final year Dennis Erickson led Beavers couldn't overcome the Bruin offense and a crucial fumble late in the game by Steven Jackson proved to seal the victory for UCLA. Beaver QB Derek Anderson tried to bring the Beav back late with a 45 yard TD to James Newsom but it wasn't enough.

In another conference battle the Vols outlasted the Bulldogs by a late goaline plunge by RB James Stewart to get the upset. Freshman QB Peyton Manning had trouble all day with the Bulldog secondary as Fred Smoot and Pig Prather both had picks but the gritty Wayne Madkin tried to bring the Bulldogs back but a dropped pitch to Dontae Walker proved to be costly as Vol LB Scott Galyon came up with it and sealed the victory for the Vols ending the Bulldogs late drive and run in this tournament.

In a great game the LB's of USC proved to be the difference sacking BYU QB John Walsh, who managed the game well(216 yards), 3 times on three straight plays on the final drive to end the Cougars hopes of moving on. LB's Duane Bickett(9 tackles 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble) and Jack Del Rio(11 tackles 2 sacks)caused havoc all day for Walsh. Call Duran Duran Rio was the story in this one.

Jim Kelly does it again and leads the Hurricane to second round, beating a very underrated Cavs team. The Cavs featuring RB tandem of Tiki Barber and Thomas Jones on offense were held to 120 yards and a controversial decision by George Welsh to start QB Tim Sherman, put the Cavs in a 14-0 hole early on. Two early Sherman interceptions by DB Ronnie Lippett gave the Canes the early lead and forced Welsh to give way to QB Aaron Brooks. Being 14 down Brooks lead the Cavs to be in the game late by hitting WR Germane Crowell cutting the lead to 14-7. Then The Cav defense stepped up with James Farrior forcing a fumble and cutting the lead to 14-10 at the half. In the second half it was all ball control by Jim Kelly, and early in the 4th quarter Kelly it Larry Brodsky with a TD in the corner over the head of DB Ronde Barber to complete the game and move the Cane to the Second Round. This Cav D was very underrated and how they went 7-5 that year I don't know(DE Patrick Kearney, LB Wali Rainer, LB Jaime Sharper, etc..

This was one of two of the probation years for Clemson and this will be a team to watch out for. The rushing game was in full effect in this one as Clemson led by QB Homer Jordan and the RB pair TB Cliff Austin and RB Chuck McSwain carved up Huskie LB Jason Chorak for 320 yards rushing on the day. The Tigers had to go with a strong emphisis on the run per the Huskie secondary featuring Lawyer Milloy and Tony Parrish shut down the passing game which forced Clemson to run and run they did. This turned into a game in the 3rd quarter when Huskie QB Damon Huard hit RB Rashaan Shehee with a screen that cut the lead to 20-17, but on the next three Huskie Drives they were ended with turnovers, DT William Perry forced a fumble and two interceptions by DB Terry Kinard and one returned for a TD by LB Johnny Rembert completed the victory for the Tigers.

If you want offense you got it in this one. It was a track meet as Oklahoma St. QB Zac Robinson went up against the Cuse All Time Passing Leader Marvin Graves(don't mess with). Zac Robinson got the scoring started with the opening drive going 70 yards and hooking up with TE Brandon Pettigrew with a 15 yard TD Reception. Then Marvin Graves answered with a 40 yard screen pass to RB David Walker to set up the TD. The RB Twin Turbo then started up for the Cowboys as they handed off to Kendall Hunter, Keith Toston who combined for 248 yards which with those stats should secure the win, but enter Marvin Graves whose versitility led the Orange to the victory ending the day with 350 yards passing and 120 on the ground to will his team to victory. On the final drive though Zac Robinson(414 yards) tried to thread the needle to Damian Davis and the pass was tipped by Cuse DL Kevin Mitchell and led to a interception to secure the victory. Other eye popping stats WR Dez Bryant 11-142 TD, Cuse WR Shelby Hill 7-120.

(519) 1984 Virginia - 21
For FG's by Tom Nichol including two late in the 4th secured the victory for the Hawkeyes. This game had a great QB matchup with All Time Passing leader for Iowa QB Chuck Long went up against the Magic QB Don Majikowski. Don Majikowski had a strong day but couldn't stay in tune and made a couple of crucial mistakes that were picked off by Iowa DB Davon Mitchell and S Mike Stoops, which gave the Hawkeyes great field position all day. Chuck Long really controlled the day, by directing the offense either by hitting WR Dave Moritz for the score in the 2nd Qtr or handing off to the three headed monster Ronnie Harmon, Owen Gill or Eddie Phillips. Clearly too much for the Cavs, despite one interception to Cavs DB Lester Lyles, Long had a terrific day throwing for 18-23 299 yards and 1 TD 1 Int. Also in this game the Hawkeye defense led by LB Larry Station shut down the powerful RB Barry Word by limiting him to only 15-60 yards.



CMU gets thrown down

What a mismatch as the Chippawas were fed to the Undefeated Canes and really had a rough time. This was over by the half as the Hurricane with QB Steve Walsh, and wideouts Sr WR Michael Irvin, Brian Blades, Brett Perriman, Randall Hill all were done by the half as the Canes rolled out to a 24-0 lead. CMU Curtis Adams the All Time CMU leading rusher was held to 4 yards. The Canes owned the CMU backfield and most of the defensive starters were done at the half, this team is deep with DL Greg Mark, LB Maurice Crum, coming off the Bench! Other notes: Bennie Blades had 2 ints, DL Daniel Stubbs had 4 Sacks. CMU way overmatched.
