RESULTS
Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(26) 1997 Nebraska - 43
(2023) 1999 San Diego State - 14
Scott Frost executed the option to perfection and the Blackshirts shut down the Aztecs. QB Jack Hawley and RB Larry Ned could find no holes in the Nebraska defense because Grant Wistrom and Jason Peter blew everything up before it started.

(999) 1991 Ohio State - 24
(1050) 1984 TCU - 22
TCU RB Kenneth Davis had success against Alonzo Spellman and the Ohio State defense, but the TCU defense couldn't hold up at the end of the game when it counted. The Buckeye running game (RBs Carlos Snow and Butler By'not'e) got kicker Tim Williams in position to kick a game winning 32-yard field goal as time expired. Check out Kirk Herbstreit, the backup QB for Ohio State, in action:

(538) 1984 LSU - 30
(1511) 1989 Colorado State - 23
Dalton Hilliard rushed for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns for LSU against Earle Bruce (fresh off his coaching stint at Ohio State) and the Rams. LSU linebackers Shawn Burks, Ricky Chatman, and Michael Brooks did a good job containing CSU RB Tony Alford.

(487) 1995 USC - 26
(1562) 2005 Tennessee - 16
Tennessee fumbled the game away against Keyshawn Johnson and the Trojans. RB Delon Washington didn't find much running room against Kevin Simon and the Vol defense, but it didn't matter because Casey Clausen and the Vol offense couldn't put the ball in the end zone.

(282) 2005 LSU - 28
(1767) 1986 Georgia Tech - 14
The LSU defense was all over QB Rick Strom from the opening snap, including this LaRon Landry sack. JaMarcus Russell didn't get much opportunity to show off his arm, but he threw one touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe. Afterward, the Georgia Tech faithful were so disappointed they tore down the stadium.

(743) 1984 Ohio State - 31
(1306) 1997 South Carolina - 19
Check out this loaded Ohio State team. Keith Byars led the way with 110 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half, then the backups got plenty of work. On defense, Pepper Johnson and company bottled up RB Troy Hambrick without much trouble.

(794) 1985 Arizona State - 26
(1255) 2002 Fresno State - 17
Arizona State's defense led the way in this matchup with Pat Hill and Fresno State. Dan Saleaumua plugged up the middle, making it hard for Rodney Davis to find running room. All American safety David Fulcher had a pick six, and CB Eric Allen picked up another interception off QB Paul Pinegar, who looked shell-shocked most of the afternoon.

(231) 1980 USC - 27
(1818) 2003 UCLA - 10
In a highly anticipated matchup between All American OT Keith Van Horne and All American DE Dave Ball, Van Horne came out on top. He completely neutralized Ball's presence and RB Marcus Allen took full advantage, running for 142 yards on just 13 carries. The USC secondary (Ronnie Lott, Joey Browner) got the best of UCLA QB Drew Olson too.

(154) 1979 BYU - 39
(1895) 1992 Louisville - 12
BYU had no trouble dismissing Howard Schnellenberger and the Louisville Cardinals in this first round blowout. The Cougar defense had QB Jeff Brohm out of rhythm all game. Offensively, QB Marc Wilson and a stable of running backs (Homer Jones, Scott Phillips, Eric Lane) found plenty of room both on the ground and through the air.

(871) 1978 Southern Miss - 22
(1178) 1993 Michigan State - 19
Southern Miss advances yet another team to the second round, their 12th of the tournament. RBs Tico Beal and Sammy Winder (just a freshman) controlled the clock most of the way for the Golden Eagles, but Stephen "Batman" Holman had a solid day for the Spartans in a losing effort.

(666) 1993 Michigan - 28
(1383) 2004 Connecticut - 17
In a fairly uneventful game, Gary Moeller's Michigan Wolverines cruised past Randy Edsall and UConn. RB Cornell Brockington ran into Michigan linebackers Trevor Pryce and Jarrett Irons at every turn, but Dan Orlovsky had some success moving the chains with short throws.

(359) 1980 UCLA - 29
(1690) 2002 Air Force - 18
Chance Harridge went over 100 yards both rushing and passing, but the Air Force defense couldn't contain Freeman McNeil.

(410) 1982 Arkansas - 21
(1639) 1978 Western Michigan - 12
Arkansas had a decided advantage in the trenches, a hallmark of Lou Holtz teams. Billy Ray Smith made 11 tackles, three behind the line of scrimmage, and helped the Razorbacks shut down WMU RB Jerome Persell. Offensive guard Steve Korte paved the way for Daryl Bowles and Gary Anderson.

(615) 1980 Florida - 24
(1434) 2001 Troy - 16
QB Wayne Peace found WR Cris Collinsworth for two touchdowns, while LB David Little and the defense controlled Larry Blakeney's running game (RBs LeBarron Black & DeWhitt Betterson).

(922) 1999 Georgia - 25
(1127) 1977 Florida - 24
Jim Donnan's Bulldogs held on tight and fought off a furious comeback attempt by Doug Dickey's Gators. Once Florida adjusted to Georgia's speedy linebackers (Kendrell Bell, Orantes Grant, Boss Bailey) they were already in an 18-0 hole. Quincy Carter paced a steady, but unspectacular Georgia offense.

(103) 1992 Miami - 35
(1946) 1980 Arizona - 10
Gino Torretta threw the ball all over the yard, including two touchdowns to Lamar Thomas, and routed Larry Smith's Arizona club.

Round 2 Matchups:
(26) 1997 Nebraska vs (999) 1991 Ohio State
(487) 1995 USC vs (538) 1984 LSU

(359) 1980 UCLA vs (666) 1993 Michigan

The pressure got to the Wolverines. With all 29 of the other Michigan teams to play so far in the tournament winning their first round games, it was up to the 1984 edition to pull off the upset and maintain the only perfect round by any school in the bracket. But alas, it wasn't meant to be.

RESULTS
Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(105) 1994 Alabama - 29
(1944) 1993 Iowa - 10
Easy win for Gene Stallings over Hayden Fry. Sam Shade kicked off the scoring by stripping the ball from RB Ryan Terry and taking it in for a touchdown.

(920) 2006 Nebraska - 27
(1129) 1984 Houston - 17
Zac Taylor threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one to Maurice Purify, to give Nebraska the win over Bill Yeoman's Cougars.

(617) 1980 McNeese State - 27
(1432) 2008 Miami - 18
McNeese State took advantage of several mistakes made by the young Hurricanes, including returning one of QB Robert Marve's 3 interceptions for a touchdown.

(408) 2005 Boston College - 30
(1641) 1984 Stanford - 16
Mathias Kiwanuka and the BC defense held Brad Muster and the underwhelming Stanford offense to just 199 total yards. WR Will Blackmon had a good game too.

(361) 1994 Michigan - 28
(1688) 1989 Kentucky - 17
Of course Michigan tailbacks Tyrone Wheatley and Tshimanga Biakabutuka got their yards, but it was the Wolverine defense who won the day. Led by linebackers Steve Morrison and Jerrett Irons, Michigan was able to shut down Kentucky RB Alfred Rawls.

(664) 1979 Notre Dame - 24
(1385) 1998 Texas Tech - 20
Notre Dame QB Rusty Lisch led a touchdown drive with less than two minutes to go to lead the Irish past upset-minded Texas Tech. DE Montae Reagor was primarily responsible for taking All American RB Vagas Ferguson mostly out of the game. Here's a clip from the Spike Dykes Show.

(873) 1980 Missouri - 25
(1176) 1980 Clemson - 14
WR Perry Tuttle made some fancy-dan moves on his lone reception, but the hard luck Clemson Tigers suffered some critical injuries on defenseand Missouri took advantage. Quarterback Phil Bradley (yes, THAT Phil Bradley) scored two touchdowns in the victory.

(152) 1979 Oklahoma - 35
(1897) 1999 Vanderbilt - 12
Barry Switzer's wishbone offense cruised past Woody Widenhofer's Commodores. OU RB Billy Sims ran for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns, and LB George Cumby took out Vandy QB Greg Zolman.

(233) 1987 UCLA - 35
(1816) 1981 Furman - 17
Oklahoma transfer Troy Aikman had a big day for the Bruins as they cruised past over-matched Furman.

(792) 2007 Penn State - 24
(1257) 1981 Oklahoma State - 14
Cowboy head coach Jimmy Johnson had no answer for the active Penn State defensive line, and Joe Parterno's Nittany Lions got the win. Ollie Ogbu, Maurice Evans and Company controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish. Could this be the start of a special tournament run for Penn State?

(745) 1990 Michigan State - 26
(1304) 1997 Western Michigan - 20
The Tico Duckett/Hyland Hickson duo combined for 222 rushing yards and were never quite contained by the Western Michigan defense. But the Spartans had to withstand a furious comeback attempt, picking off Tim Lester's hail mary on the last play of the game to secure the win.

(280) 2005 Alabama - 31
(1769) 2005 Colorado State - 13
Mike Shula's best Alabama team relied on its stout defense (LBs DeMeco Ryans, Freddie Roach) to shut down QB Justin Holland and the high scoring CSU offense, while the electric Tyrone Prothro lit up the scoreboard.

(489) 1979 Temple - 30
(1560) 1994 Texas Tech - 19
Who knew Temple was good back in the day? This Zach Thomas sack of Temple QB Brian Broomell was pretty much the only highlight of the day for the Red Raiders as the freshman backfield of Zebbie Lethridge and Byron Hanspard fumbled the game away early.

(536) 1988 Oklahoma - 28
(1513) 1983 Wyoming - 16
Freshman RB Mike Gaddis was the key component in Barry Switzer's wishbone today, as he led the way in ousting Jay Novacek and Wyoming.

(1001) 2006 Georgia Tech - 24
(1048) 1992 BYU - 23
Calvin Johnson had 10 receptions for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns in leading Georgia Tech to a first round victory over BYU, sending QB Ryan Hancock, WR Eric Drage, and RB Jamal Willis home.

(24) 1996 Florida - 52
(2025) 1989 San Jose State - 14
Steve Spurrier's Fun 'N Gun offense was in high gear thanks to the efficiency of Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel. Wuerffel used every one of his weapons (WRs Reidel Anthony, Ike Hilliard, Jacquez Green) in route to hanging half-a-hundred on Claude Gilbert's Spartans.

Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(17) 1992 Alabama - 31
(2032) 1977 West Texas A&M - 10
The Alabama defense was every bit as good as advertised. John Copeland and Eric Curry owned the trenches and the Tide rolled to an easy first round victory.

(1008) 1994 North Carolina - 29
(1041) 2007 Arkansas - 31
Carolina head coach Mack Brown could only watch in amazement as Arkansas tailbacks Darren McFadden and Felix Jones ran all over his defense.

(529) 2006 Oregon State - 32
(1520) 1994 Iowa - 21
The speed of Oregon State got the best of Hayden Fry's Iowa team. Sammie Stroughter had an amazing punt return for touchdown in the first quarter to set the rout in motion. Sedrick Shaw ran hard for Iowa, but each of his three touchdowns were answered by Oregon State scores.

(496) 2007 Oregon - 34
(1553) 2004 South Carolina - 19
South Carolina could muster very little offense against the Ducks. Freshman Ko Simpson came up with the Gamecocks' only touchdown on a pick-six in the second quarter, and Josh Brown kicked four field goals. Dennis Dixon and the Oregon offense had no trouble moving the ball, though.

(273) 1988 Michigan - 31
(1776) 2002 Nebraska - 14
Nebraska QB Jammal Lord was one of the most underrated Nebraska quarterbacks in terms of pure athleticism, but Mark Messner and the Michigan defense did a good enough job containing the rest of the Husker skill players that it didn't matter when Lord ran for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns.

(752) 1990 Texas A&M - 29
(1297) 2005 California - 22
In another case of a great player being eliminated due to a weak team around him, Marshawn Lynch and the 2005 Cal Bears were eliminated by the Aggies. The Wrecking Crew bottled up Cal backs Lynch and Justin Forsett most of the day, and CB Kevin Smith picked off Joe Ayoob twice.

(785) 1984 Texas - 19
(1264) 1983 Boston College - 24
It didn't take a Doug Flutie hail mary (that wouldn't come for another year) for BC to upset the Longhorns, but it did take an exceptional game plan by coach Jack Bicknell. Bicknell had Flutie throwing short passes to keep the chains moving against the stout Texas defense (featuring All Americans Jerry Gray and Tony Degrate), while the experienced Eagle defense shut down QB Todd Dodge.

(240) 1980 Alabama - 30
(1809) 1980 Wake Forest - 10
Bear Bryant's Tide rolled past John Mackovic's Demon Deacons in much the same manner as the '92 edition did earlier in this bracket - with a dominating defense. Defensive end E.J. Junior sacked Wake QB Jay Venuto three times.

(145) 2001 Nebraska - 43
(1904) 1987 Tulane - 17
Dahrran Diedrick returned from an injury just in time for the tournament. Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Eric Crouch passed more than expected, and Jamie Burrow came up with three sacks in blowing out their first round opponent. Mack Brown, Tulane's head coach in 1987, takes another hit in this bracket.

(880) 1987 Indiana - 20
(1169) 2005 North Carolina State - 17
Indiana blocked a punt deep in N.C. State territory late in the fourth quarter, and Dave Schnell found Ernie Jones in the end zone two plays later to give the Hoosiers a big win. N.C. State's stellar defensive effort (Mario Williams, Manny Lawson, Oliver Hoyte) was wasted thanks to the Pack's under-performing offense and mistake-prone special teams.

(657) 1984 Tennessee - 24
(1392) 2000 UAB - 19
UAB's defense kept them in the game the whole way, thanks to the constant pressure applied by Bryan Thomas. But Tennesse found a way to pull out the victory on a Johnnie Jones 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Johnny Majors was pleased with his team's heart.

(368) 1988 Southern Miss - 32
(1681) 2008 Wisconsin - 22
Wisconsin took an early 12-0 lead, but James Henry returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown to spark the Golden Eagles. Brett Favre threw for three touchdowns in the third quarter and Southern Miss never looked back.

(401) 1988 Washington State - 31
(1648) 1996 Ball State - 21
The Washington State offense was too much for Ball State. QB Timm Rosenbach threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, and RB Steve Broussard had 177 yards of total offense. Ball State's All American punter Brad Maynard had a sweet punt in the game though.

(624) 1991 Tulsa - 26
(1425) 1992 West Virginia - 21
A talented West Virginia offense (QB Darren Studstill, RB Adrian Murrell, WR James Jett, C Mike Compton) struggled to find a rhythm against LB Jerry White and the Tulsa defense.

(913) 1982 Boston College - 21
(1136) 1995 Illinois - 17
A solid defensive effort by the Illini defense (Simeon Rice, Kevin Hardy) didn't matter because the Illini offense gave up the game winning score. BC linebacker Steve DeOssie picked up a Johnny Johnson fumble and returned it 54 yards for what ended up being the game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.

(112) 2007 LSU - 42
(1937) 1980 Louisiana-Monroe - 17
This game was almost unfair. Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey was a man among boys in the trenches, and I'm sure ULM QB John Holman will have nightmares about him for quite some time. LSU dominated early and got all the backups - including QB Ryan Perrilloux - some significant playing time in the second half.

Round 2 Matchups:
(17) 1992 Alabama vs (1041) 2007 Arkansas
(496) 2007 Oregon vs (529) 2006 Oregon State

RESULTS
Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(90) 1979 Alabama - 30
(1959) 1977 Georgia - 3
The Alabama defense absolutely devoured Georgia's offense. Defensive end E.J. Junior knocked Bulldog quarterback Jeff Pyburn out of the game with a big hit in the second quarter, forcing head coach Vince Dooley to invent some creative ways to move the chains.

(935) 2004 Fresno State - 38
(1114) 2002 Toledo - 31
Pat Hill's explosive offense gutted Toledo on the ground and advanced to the second round. Running back duo Wendell Mathis and Bryson Sumlin combined for over 200 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Toledo duo, QB Brian Jones and WR Carl Ford, hooked up for two touchdowns, but couldn't keep up with Fresno on the score board.

(602) 1983 Penn State - 24
(1447) 1980 Northern Illinois - 17
Freshman running back D.J. Dozier controlled the clock on the ground for Paterno's squad. The Nittany Lions overcame five turnovers, but struggled to put away the opportunistic Huskies.

(423) 1986 Ohio State - 28
(1626) 1993 Texas - 14
John Mackovic's underachieving Longhorns fell short against Chris Spielman and the Buckeyes. Safety Sonny Gordon picked off Texas quarterback Shea Morenz twice as he looked for receivers Mike Adams and Lovell Pinkney.

(346) 2008 Georgia - 34
(1703) 1984 Vanderbilt - 23
Knowshon Moreno ran for 172 yards and 2 touchdown, and freshman WR A.J. Green caught 7 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown from Matthew Stafford as the Bulldogs cruised past QB Kurt Page and the Commodores.

(679) 1994 Oregon - 25
(1370) 2007 Florida State - 18
A back-and-forth contest ended up being decided in dramatic fashion. With the game tied at 18 and Florida State in scoring position with a minute to go, redshirt freshman Kenny Wheaton picked off a Drew Weatherford pass and ran it back 95 yards for the game winning touchdown.

(858) 2008 BYU - 24
(1191) 1983 Washington - 23
QB Steve Pelluer nearly led the Washington upset. But when he ran into the end zone for a touchdown with 2 seconds left in the game to pull within one, he was called for a controversial celebration penalty. Freshman kicker Jeff Jaeger then had the long extra point try blocked and BYU won the game despite a sub-par effort from their star QB Max Hall.

(167) 2003 Oklahoma - 43
(1882) 1998 Oregon State - 14
Undersized QB Jonathan Smith found Greg Ainsworth for a 75-yard touchdown on the second play of the game, but it was downhill from there for the Beavers. Freshman tailback Ken Simonton could never get going against a fierce Oklahoma defense featuring All Americans Tommie Harris, Teddy Lehman, and Derrick Strait. The '03 Sooners appear poised to make a deep run in this tournament.

(218) 1981 SMU - 29
(1831) 1995 Louisville - 14
The Pony Express used the power of The Goggles to glide past Louisville. Eric Dickerson ran for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns, and QB Lance McIlhenny paced an efficient offense all around for SMU. QB Marty Lowe and the Cardinals get sent home.

(807) 1983 Florida State - 33
(1242) 1998 Washington - 25
Washington's poor defensive effort allowed FSU tailback Greg Allen to run for four touchdowns on the day, despite carrying the ball only 10 times. Brock Huard played well for Washington, but Willie Hurst and the running game never got going.

(730) 1997 Mississippi State - 24
(1319) 1997 Colorado - 22
The Mississippi State defense was in control all game. Greg Favors came up with two sacks of Buffalo QB John Hessler, and linebackers Barron Simpson and Jamaal Dinkins bottled up Herchell Troutman and the running game. Colorado linebacker Hannibal Navies played an excellent game, but it wasn't enough.

(295) 1995 Florida State - 42
(1754) 1987 Kent State - 16
The Florida State defense shut down Kent's only offensive weapon (RB Eric Wilkerson), and the offense had no troubles scoring either. Danny Kanell threw 4 touchdown passes, and Pooh Bear Williams ran in two more.

(474) 1979 South Carolina - 28
(1575) 1987 Southern Miss - 17
George Rogers was unstoppable for South Carolina, and the Gamecock defense pressured USM freshman quarterback Brett Favre into several mistakes.

(551) 2008 Pittsburgh - 23
(1498) 1977 Louisiana-Lafayette - 17
In typical Pitt fashion, the Panthers controlled most of the game, but made it interesting at the end. Scott McKillop came up with some key stops on the last drive to end Augie Tammariello's hopes of advancing. LeSean McCoy wasn't on top of his game, as he compiled only 71 yards rushing.

(986) 1978 LSU - 24
(1063) 2004 Bowling Green - 30
LSU ran into an offensive buzzsaw in Gregg Brandon's Bowling Green. LSU lost primarily because their defense had no idea how to handle the Falcons' spread offense. Omar Jacobs threw for nearly 400 yards, spread out among Cole Magner, Charles Sharon, and Steve Sanders.

(39) 1981 Clemson - 32
(2010) 1978 Wisconsin - 7
The Cindarella Clemson Tigers blew out Wisconsin in this first round matchup. All American defensive lineman Tim Krumrie was no match for the Clemson offense. And the Clemson defense nearly matched the performance by 1979 Alabama earlier in this bracket.

Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(94) 1980 Georgia - 34
(1955) 1989 Louisiana Tech - 15
For some reason this game was only available on the radio. Freshman Herschel Walker ran all over LA Tech and the Georgia defense held LA Tech out of the end zone. Kicker Matt Stover was busy, though, kicking 5 field goals.

(931) 1983 Wisconsin - 36
(1118) 1996 San Diego State - 34
The passing games for each team were featured in this shootout. QB Billy Blanton hooked up with WR Will Blackwell for two touchdowns for the Aztecs, and Wisconsin's Al Toon hauled in two touchdowns from QB Randy Wright.

(606) 1980 Ohio State - 33
(1443) 2002 Mississippi - 18
Ole Miss' Matt Grier picked off Art Schlichter twice, but Ohio State RB Calvin Murray and Schlichter led an Ohio State running attack that was never stopped. The Ohio State eliminates Eli Manning.

(419) 1977 Nebraska - 24
(1630) 1978 South Carolina - 16
Nebraska defensive linemen (and future coaches) Tony Samuel and Barney Cotton handled South Carolina's sophomore stud RB George Rogers (love those stars on the helmets) just enough for the Huskers to advance. I.M. Hipp ran for 112 yards for Nebraska.

(350) 1989 Nebraska - 38
(1699) 2008 Notre Dame - 17
Nebraska corners Bruce Pickens and Tahaun Lewis did a good job overall covering Notre Dame's young receivers, but Golden Tate was still able to break loose for two long touchdown catches. Other than that, though, it was total domination by QB Gerry Gdowski and the Huskers.

(675) 1981 Southern Miss - 26
(1374) 2005 North Carolina - 10
The Tar Heel defense had no answer for USM RBs Sammy Winder and Sam Dejarnette. UNC QB Matt Baker threw three interceptions and directed an offense that only managed 243 total yards.

(862) 1983 SMU - 20
(1187) 1996 Wisconsin - 18
Freshman Ron Dayne carried the ball 42 times for 198 yards, but it wasn't enough for the Badgers to knock off Bobby Collins (who also coached the '81 Southern Miss team that won in this bracket) and the Mustangs. With all the running, All America CB Russell Carter didn't have much to do for SMU.

(163) 1991 Michigan - 43
(1886) 2008 Arkansas - 14
Desmond Howard caught 3 touchdown passes, and that's all that needs to be said. This excellent Michigan team sent Bobby Petrino's Razorbacks home without much effort.

(222) 1986 LSU - 32
(1827) 2008 North Carolina State - 17
Freshman QB Russell Wilson did everything he could to keep N.C. State in the game, but this LSU team is just too good. WR Wendell Davis had 6 catches for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns from QB Tommy Hodson.

(803) 1998 Oregon - 35
(1246) 1993 Arizona State - 26
Oregon won the Yellow Helmet Bowl. Arizona State's defense couldn't hold up against Oregon running backs Reuben Droughns and Herman Ho-Ching. Droughns tweaked his leg in the fourth quarter, though, his status for the rest of the tournament might be in question.

(734) 2008 Florida State - 33
(1315) 2007 California - 23
Cal's DeSean Jackson provided some highlight reel moments, including a remarkable punt return for touchdown, but Nate Longshore threw 4 interceptions and the Cal defense had trouble corralling freshman QB Christian Ponder.

(291) 2001 Syracuse - 27
(1758) 1998 California - 13
Dwight Freeney sacked QB Justin Vedder three times and the Syracuse defense smothered Tom Holmoe's Cal offense. The Orange chose to avoid Cal CB Deltha O'Neal by keeping the ball on the ground the majority of the game. QB R.J. Anderson and RB James Mungro combined to run for 214 yards.

(478) 1986 Arizona - 30
(1571) 2005 Central Michigan - 17
QB Kent Smith gave the Chippewas an early 14-0 lead with two touchdown passes. But the defense was awful the rest of the way, and coach Brian Kelly had no answers. Arizona QB Alfred Jenkins, not known for his passing, threw for 289 yards and 3 touchdowns - two to WR Derek Hill.

(547) 2002 Penn State - 35
(1502) 1996 Colorado State - 20
It was the Larry Johnson show in this first round matchup. Johnson ran for 169 yards on only 11 carries for the Nittany Lions, who coasted past Moses Moreno, Calvin Branch, and Colorado State.

(990) 1996 Navy - 26
(1059) 1988 Western Michigan - 28
QB Chris McCoy (161 rushing yards) and Navy controlled the majority of the clock and the game, but Western wouldn't go away. Then Tony Kimbrough found Bruce Boyko for a 44-yard touchdown pass with just 1:33 to play to give the Broncos their first lead of the game, and the win.

(35) 1987 Florida State - 48
(2014) 1983 Utah - 13
Hello Utah. And goodbye Utah. Florida State's athletic secondary (Deion Sanders, Martin Mayhew, Stanley Shiver, LeRoy Butler) picked off Utah QB Mark Stevens 5 times as the Seminoles rolled.

Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(110) 1995 Northwestern - 29
(1939) 1979 Virginia Tech - 12
Bill Dooley could have used more Armored Hokies on the field because Northwestern RB Darnell Autry ran right through the players that did suit up. Northwestern might be the Real Deal.

(915) 1981 Toledo - 19
(1134) 1991 Central Michigan - 14
Chuck Stobart got the better of Hern Deromedi in this MAC matchup, despite CMU RB Billy Smith's effort (41 carries for 13 yards and 2 touchdowns).

(622) 1978 Missouri - 33
(1427) 1982 Duke - 22
Missouri's explosive offense, featuring the running of Earl Gant and James Wilder, outshined Ben Bennett and Red Wilson's Duke offense to advance to the second round. TE Kellen Winslow also caught a touchdown pass from QB Phil Bradley.

(403) 1998 Texas - 32
(1646) 1977 Georgia Tech - 21
Ricky Williams carried the ball 34 times in the ball game, racking up over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns, wearing out safety Don Bessillieu and linebacker Lucius Sanford in the process. Defensively the Horns have work to do, as they allowed GT RB Eddie Lee Ivory to top the century mark on the ground.

(366) 2000 Notre Dame - 28
(1683) 1985 Virginia - 20
The "Majik Man", Don Majkowski, didn't have enough majik to propel Virginia to the second round. Majkowski and RB Barry Word were contained by the Notre Dame defense, featuring Anthony Weaver and Rocky Boiman. And in typical fashion for Notre Dame in the year 2000, the offense didn't carry the bulk of the scoring load. Anthony Denman returned a fumble for a touchdown and Joey Getherall returned a punt for a touchdown.

(659) 1991 Oklahoma - 28
(1390) 2001 North Carolina State - 16
N.C. State linebacker Levar Fisher came up short in this diving tackle attempt, and Sooner RB Mike Gaddis took it to the house. Sophomore QB Philip Rivers piled up the yards, but couldn't convert in the red zone.

(878) 2002 Boston College - 30
(1171) 1980 Stanford - 24
Derrick Knight ran wild on the Stanford defnse and single-handedly controlled the clock for Boston College, keeping John Elway and the high powered Stanford passing attack on the sidelines for the majority of the game.

(147) 2002 Oklahoma - 44
(1902) 2005 New Mexico - 14
Rocky Long's Lobos were no match for the Sooners. RB DonTrell Moore was held well below his average by the stingy Sooner front. Tommie Harris and Jimmy Wilkerson harassed UNM QB Kole McKamey, preventing him from ever finding WR Hank Baskett.

(238) 1992 Michigan - 34
(1811) 1991 Virginia Tech - 15
Fullback Burnie Legette had a big day blocking for Michigan, plowing the way for tailbacks Tyrone Wheatley and Jesse Johnson, and scored a touchdown of his own. The speedy Derrick Alexander returned a punt for a touchdown and the Wolverine defense forced three turnovers.

(787) 1979 San Diego State - 27
(1262) 1986 SMU - 23
The last SMU team prior to receiving the "Death Penalty" was sent home by Claude Gilbert's San Diego State squad. WR Steve Stapler caught 2 touchdown passes from Mark Halda, and the defense held SMU QB Bobby Watters in check.

(750) 1983 Virginia Tech - 22
(1299) 1978 Louisiana Tech - 13
Bill Dooley's Hokie defense was spectacular, holding QB Keith Thibodeaux and the LSU offense to just 189 yards of offense. LB Mike Johnson led the attack with 12 tackles, while David Marvel and Bruce Smith picked up a sack apiece.

(275) 1991 California - 34
(1774) 1982 Central Michigan - 17
Cal running back Russell White hurdled the Chippewa defense to the tune of 198 yards and 3 touchdowns, but apparently hurdling was illegal back in '91. The Cal defense had some holes of its own though, as they allowed CMU RB Curtis Adams to run for almost 200 yards as well.

(494) 1978 Tulsa - 31
(1555) 2004 Northwestern - 19
There was no magic for Northwestern in this game. Randy Walker's defense allowed Tulsa QB Dave Rader to throw for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns. Safety Lovie Smith picked off Northwestern QB Brett Basanez twice in sealing the easy victory for the Golden Hurricane. And after the game, 8 was the place in Tulsa, OK.

(531) 1979 Clemson - 24
(1518) 1988 Maryland - 13
Tigermania was in full effect. The powerful Clemson defense, headlined by All American defensive lineman Jim Stuckey, controlled the game from start to finish and never allowed Maryland QB Neil O'Donnell to set his feet in the pocket.

(1006) 1984 Toledo - 16
(1043) 1990 Virginia Tech - 17
Vaughn Hebron made a one-handed grab of a Will Furrer pass and took it into the end zone for what would end up being the game winning score as the Hokies gave Toledo a taste of their own upset medicine.

(19) 2006 Florida - 27
(2030) 1983 Southern Illinois - 14
The excellent Southern Illinois secondary nearly enabled the Salukis to pull the upset of the tournament. All American Donnell Daniel and Terry Taylor blanketed Florida receivers Dallas Baker and Andre Caldwell in the first half and actually took a 14-13 lead into the half. But the Gator defense clamped down in the second half and Reggie Nelson ran an interception back for touchdown to give Florida a much more difficult first round win than anticipated.

Round 2 Matchups:
(110) 1995 Northwestern vs (915) 1981 Toledo
(403) 1998 Texas vs (622) 1978 Missouri
