RESULTS - Round of 512

(126) 1991 Alabama - 23
(387) 1983 Illinois - 17
Freshman David Palmer returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown to break the game open for Alabama. A stifling Crimson Tide defense (John Copeland, Eric Curry, Antonio Langham) held Illinois QB Jack Trudeau to just 127 yards passing. Also playing for the Illini: tight end Tim Brewster.

(382) 1978 Houston - 18
(131) 1985 Tennessee - 24
The Tennessee defense contained Houston's potent running game and QB Tony Robinson threw 2 touchdown passes and ran for another in this third round matchup. Cougar tailbacks Emmett King and Randy Love, each 1,000 yard backs in the 1978 season, were held to just 108 yards combined.

(254) 2001 Illinois - 20
(259) 1986 Alabama - 26
An excellent Illinois secondary (Eugene Wilson, Christian Morton, Bobby Jackson) completely took away the Alabama passing game. Tide QB Mike Shula only managed 76 passing yards in the game. But tailbacks Bobby Humphrey and Gene Jelks carried the load on offense, and linebacker Cornelius Bennett disrupted Kurt Kittner and the Illini offense enough to carry Alabama into the semifinals in Bracket #3.

(515) 1981 Michigan - 14
(3) 1978 USC - 22
John Robinson got the best of Bo Schembechler in this matchup of coaching legends. USC safety Ronnie Lott hit Michigan receiver Anthony Carter so hard on a catch across the middle in the first quarter that the playmaker was never the same the rest of the game. Without Carter, the Michigan offense was significantly easier to stop. Charles White was held to just 76 yards rushing by the Michigan defense, but the Trojans mustered enough offense elsewhere (FB Lynn Cain had 103 yards and 2 touchdowns) to advance.
