RESULTS - BRACKET 10
Round 2
(seed) year school - score
(1034) 1994 Mississippi State - 16
The 10th overall seed in the tournament cruised once again on their way to the Round of 512. Although Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush were the headliners heading into this game, it was RB LenDale White who did the most damage against Jackie Sherrill's defense. His hard nosed running early wore down the Bulldogs, which opened the door for Reggie Bush to chalk up 127 yards and 3 touchdowns receiving. On the other side of the ball, Shaun Cody and the USC defensive line made it impossible for QB Derrick Taite to stand in the pocket. In fact, the pressure was so great that Taite only completed 3 passes all day, none to star wideout Eric Moulds.
(522) 1992 Washington State - 24
(503) 1998 Virginia - 28
In an entertaining back-and-forth contest, it was George Welsh's Cavaliers that came out on top aganst Mike Price's Cougars. Drew Bledsoe threw for 273 yards and 3 touchdowns against a solid Virginia defense (S Anthony Poindexter, DE Patrick Kerney, LB Wali Rainer, LB Byron Thweatt) that held RB Shaumbe Wright-Fair to just 43 yards on the ground. The Hoos won the game on a wonderful drive capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Brooks to Thomas Jones.
(266) 1979 Nebraska - 29
(759) 1995 Virginia - 17
This time, Virginia couldn't pull a win out of their hat. Tiki Barber ran for 131 yards and a touchdown, but had two costly fumbles that led to Husker touchdowns. The first fumble was on the first play of the game, and Nebraska I-Back Jarvis Redwine punched it in the end zone just two plays later. Barber's second fumble came in the third quarter, with Virginia down just 15-10 and driving. Nebraska LB Kim Baker picked up the fumble and ran it back 66 yards for a touchdown, sucking the life out of the Cavs. But I'll leave Virginia fans with this great moment from the 1995 season:
(778) 1980 Central Michigan - 17
(247) 1995 Kansas - 21
Kansas jumped out to an easy 21-0 first half lead, and then had to hold on for dear life after a mistake-prone second half. June Henley and L.T. Levine each had a long touchdown run in the first half for the Jayhawks. But the focus and production dropped off dramatically in the second half when Kansas players thought they already had the game won. But CMU backs Willie Todd and Reggie Mitchell put their heads down and chipped away at the Jayhawk defense until the lead was cut to four points early in the fourth quarter. But Glen Mason got the attention of his defense and they stepped up. Maurice Gaddie picked off a Kevin Northup pass with 2:33 to play, and the Chippewas never got the ball back.
(138) 1984 BYU - 30
(1162) 1984 Arizona - 17
BYU won the national title in 1984, so getting the #138 overall seed in this tournament seemed like a slap in the face. "Air Edwards" is out to prove some people wrong, and they cruised against an overmatched Arizona team from the same season. Robbie Bosco came out throwing, putting up 221 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half alone. The Cougars took a 21-3 lead into halftime, but Larry Smith's Arizona squad never quit. QB Alfred Jenkins managed to throw two touchdown passes in the third quarter to make it interesting, if only for a few minutes. BYU answered the bell with a quick, 3-play touchdown drive featuring a 54-yard reception by TE David Mills and a 23-yard touchdown run by FB Lakei Heimuli.
(650) 1979 Yale - 13
(375) 1990 Florida - 27
It was an up and down year for Florida QB Shane Matthews under first year head coach Steve Spurrier, and it showed in this second round matchup with Yale. The Gators were heavy favorites over the old Ivy Leaguers, but the "Fun 'N Gun" offense never quite got off the ground. Matthews threw for 245 yards, but also threw 2 crucial picks. Lucky for the Gators, Yale couldn't muster much of an offense either. Brad Culpepper and the Florida defense held Yale to just 176 yards of total offense.
(394) 1985 Auburn - 22
(1418) 1990 Central Michigan - 16
The Cinderella Chippewas ride is over. The lowest seeded team left in the tournament put up a respectable fight, but ended up getting knocked out by Bo Jackson and Auburn. Herb Deromedi's balanced offense put up decent numbers against a good Auburn defense, but RB Billy Smith couldn't punch it in the end zone and the Chippewas came up empty on two separate trips to the red zone.
(906) 1994 Boston College - 17
(119) 1984 Florida - 24
Part of the reason 1984 BYU has such a chip on their shoulder is the fact that they were placed in the same bracket as Florida from the same season - but as a lower seed. Florida didn't play like they deserved a better seed today, partly due to the coaching instability. Charley Pell coached the first game of this tournament, but was fired after being suspected of violating NCAA rules. Galen Hall took over head coaching duties in this game and led the Gators to a hard fought victory. It was Mamula Moon in the first quarter, with BC defensive end Mike Mamula sacking Florida QB Kerwin Bell twice on the opening drive. Kerwin Bell responded by running for a touchdown on the Gators' second drive, but picked up an embarassing penalty in the process. The Gators loaded backfield (Neal Anderson, John L. Williams, Lorenzo Hampton) eventually wore down the Eagles defense, and with help from All American lineman Lomas Brown, Anderson punched in the winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The Shane Matthews dance, Mamula Moon, and Kerwin Bell are greatness. Only in this tournament can you say Shane Matthews, Mamula and Kerwin Bell and say they are greatness.
