RESULTS - Round of 512
(578) 2007 Auburn - 12
Auburn linebacker Tray Blackmon flashed some of his limitless potential with a couple big hits in the game, but the Nittany Lion defense had the last laugh. Defensive tackles Bruce Clark and Matt Millen combined to clog the middle and eliminate Auburn's rushing game (Ben Tate, Brad Lester, Mario Fannin), and Tiger QB Brandon Cox threw 3 interceptions.
(322) 1989 Virginia - 19
(191) 2006 Auburn - 23
Auburn got a significant contribution from their defense and special teams to get by George Welsh and Virginia. Kenny Irons out-rushed Marcus Wilson 98-77, and QB Shawn Moore had an off game.
(194) 1989 USC - 19
(319) 1977 Michigan - 17
Two excellent defenses negated an intriguing quarterback matchup - Todd Marinovich vs Rick Leach. Instead it came down to a field position battle. USC tailback Ricky Ervins carried the ball 38 times for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns. Michigan halfback Harlan Huckleby had a 54-yard touchdown, but only finished with 58 yards on the day. In other words, the Wolverines didn't have near as much success as they did against A&M back in 1977.
(575) 1983 Pittsburgh - 10
(63) 1985 Oklahoma - 24
Quarterback John Congemi and the Pitt offense had trouble moving the ball all day against a ridiculously loaded Oklahoma defense. Nose guard Tony Casillas and company held the Panthers to just 131 yards and 7 first downs in the ballgame. Head coach Foge Fazio gets eliminated.
Bracket Semifinals:
(66) 1978 Penn State vs (191) 2006 Auburn
(63) 1985 Oklahoma vs (194) 1989 USC
