RESULTS - Round of 512
(109) 1990 Miami - 32
(404) 1995 Texas - 17
Texas fans had to be having flashbacks to the 1991 Cotton Bowl, when this very Miami team annihilated the Horns 46-3. The '95 Texas running game (Shon Mitchell and freshman fullback Ricky Williams) put up more of a fight than the '90 edition did, but it ended in a blowout once again. Miami QB Craig Erickson threw for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns, with the speedy Randal Hill pulling down 3 receptions for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns.
(365) 1979 Penn State - 17
(148) 1988 UCLA - 23
Defensive tackle Bruce Clark and the rest of the Penn State defense played well, holding Troy Aikman and the explosive UCLA offense to just 10 points over the first three quarters. But Aikman put together two impressive touchdown drives in the final period, and Darryl Henley picked off a Dayle Tate pass in the closing minutes to secure the Bruins win.
(237) 1999 Marshall - 24
(276) 1994 Auburn - 21
Auburn's "Cardiac Kids" finally met their match. QB Patrick Nix hooked up with WR Frank Sanders twice in the game, including this one late in the fourth quarter to give Terry Bowden's squad a 21-17 lead. But Chad Pennington led the two-minute offense 63 yards for the game winning touchdown.
(532) 2000 Toledo - 17
(20) 1978 Alabama - 27
Gary Pinkel's high powered offense, featuring 1,500-yard tailback Chester Taylor and athletic QB Tavares Bolden, didn't have much success against the Tide's "Redwood Forest Defense". Defensive linemen Marty Lyons and E.J. Junior ate up the Rocket offensive line and held Taylor to just 44 yards rushing. Running back Major Ogilvie scored two touchdowns for Alabama.
