RESULTS - Round of 512

(78) 1986 Miami - 27
(435) 1979 North Carolina - 16
Jimmy Johnson and the Hurricanes didn't have any trouble keeping the Tar Heels at arms length and advancing past the third round. Despite the presence of pass rushing menace Lawrence Taylor on the UNC defense, Vinny Testaverde stood tall in the pocket and picked apart the secondary when necessary.

(334) 1984 Nebraska - 31
(179) 2002 Texas - 34 (3 OT)
In one of the more exciting games of the third round, Texas topped Nebraska in triple overtime. Two excellent defensive performances were wasted by all the points put on the board in the overtime periods, but make no mistake about it - this was a defensive football game. For Texas, Cory Redding and Derrick Johnson did their part in disrupting the Nebraska option game. In fact, they forced Tom Osborne to go with Craig Sundberg (the passer) at quarterback in place of Travis Taylor (the runner) in order to balance out the offense a little. Nebraska linebacker Marc Munford picked off a Chris Simms pass and returned it for a touchdown in the third quarter to get the Huskers back in the game. Texas didn't separate from the Huskers again until the third overtime when Roy Williams came down with a jump ball in the end zone for the game winning touchdown catch.

(206) 1988 West Virginia - 28
(307) 1982 Auburn - 19
In a star studded showdown, Major Harris propelled the Mountaineers past freshman Bo Jackson and the Auburn Tigers.

(462) 2002 Maryland - 23
(51) 1995 Florida - 35
A good Maryland secondary (Madieu Williams, Domonique Foxworth, Dennard Wilson) were busy trying to defend Danny Wuerffel and the Florida passing game. Ralph Friedgen tried to go with the same defensive game plan Nebraska did when they beat this Florida team 62-24 in the national championship game by sending linebackers Leroy Ambush and E.J. Henderson on a blitz whenever the Gators went with no backs in the backfield. But Wuerffel countered by hitting Chris Doering on a number of hot routes to slow the rush. The Gators weren't able to score points in their usual manner (sub-two minute drives), but they put together touchdown drives nonetheless.
