RESULTS - BRACKET 59
Round 2
(seed) year school - score

(70) 2002 Miami - 47
(1094) 2003 Texas Tech - 28
Texas Tech QB B.J. Symons got his stats (421 yards, 4 touchdowns), but Miami came away with an easy win. The Hurricane defensive line was successful in pressuring Symons throughout the game. Jerome McDougle, Jamaal Green, William Joseph and company only registered 3 sacks, but the pressure they put on Symons was enough to throw the senior's timing off. On the other side of the ball QB Ken Dorsey picked apart the Tech defense, finding WR Andre Johnson and TE Kellen Winslow wide open on multiple occasions. This Miami team is loaded and should be a favorite to come out of this bracket.

(582) 1982 Alabama - 22
(443) 1998 Georgia - 20
Bear Bryant's final team proved it had one more game in it by pulling off a mild upset of 1998 Georgia. Quincy Carter threw 3 interceptions to an experienced Alabama defense (Senior CB Jeremiah Castille had two of the three picks) and Olandis Gary didn't have much success on the ground. Tide QB Walter Lewis was excellent after being benched for two series' in the first half. Lewis topped the century mark through the air and on the ground.

(326) 2008 Penn State - 33
(699) 2002 West Virginia - 20
Even though Rich Rodriguez didn't get his Michigan team in the field, he got several West Virginia teams into the tournament. This Mountaineer team's ground game never got out of second gear, though, against the feroucious Penn State defensive front. Although RB Avon Cobourne, RB Quincy Wilson, and QB Rasheed Marshall combined for over 3,200 rushing yards in 2002, the Nittany Lions held the trio to just 161 yards. Marshall in particular was frustrated because PSU linemen Aaron Maybin and Jared Odrick were in his face before he had a chance to make a decision on the option.

(838) 1980 Long Beach State - 13
(187) 1977 Pittsburgh - 31
Pitt stomped the overmatche 49ers 31-13 to advance to the round of 512. QB Matt Cavanaugh threw two touchdown passes to WR Gordon Jones and FB Freddy Jacobs ran for 102 yards and a touchdown. The Pitt defense added a touchdown of their own when safety Bob Jury scored on a pick six. Long Beach's key contributors were DT Ben Rudolph and WR Ron Johnson. After the game Pitt head coach Jackie Sherrill displayed his trademark class.

(198) 1979 Florida State - 21
(827) 1987 Michigan - 17
Michigan needed a little luck to win this game, but got none as Bobby Bowden's Noles earned a hard fought victory. Tailback Jamie Morris ran for 134 yards on 34 carries, but only found the end zone once against "Big Bad" Ron Simmons and the Florida State defense. Both teams played two quarterbacks in this game with Demetrius Brown (Michigan) and Wally Woodham (Florida State) getting the key snaps in the fourth quarter. But the QB shuffling set a very uneven tone to this game.

(710) 1987 San Jose State - 23
(315) 1998 Air Force - 30
Contrasting styles was the name of the game today. Fisher DeBerry obviously stayed on the ground with QB Blane Morgan running the triple option for Air Force. Conversely San Jose State chose the passing game - QB Mike Perez threw the ball 48 times in the game, finding WR Guy Liggins 12 times for 175 yards.

(454) 1979 Washington - 23
(571) 1989 Washington - 19
Don James and the Huskies took on Don James and the Huskies in this second round matchup. With nothing but a decade separating these teams, it was the '79 edition who got the best of the '89 edition. The running game (Joe Steele, Toussaint Tyler, Vince Coby) for the '79 edition controlled the pace of the game. QB Cary Conklin had a solid day for '89 Washington, but the offense stalled in the red zone. Le-Lo Lang came up with two points for the '89 Huskies on a blocked extra point attempt that went through the hands of seemingly every player on the field.

(1083) 1998 Central Florida - 20
(59) 1988 Florida State - 35
Daunte Culpepper and the Golden Knights met their match against in-state rivals Florida State. A loaded Seminole defense had to adjust to the size and strength of Culpepper, but once they did it was all FSU. Deion Sanders returned a punt for a touchdown and QB Chip Ferguson threw two touchdown passes before giving way to Peter Tom Willis. The 'Noles also may have overtaken 1987 Missouri for best rap of the tournament.

(187) 1977 Pittsburgh vs (326) 2008 Penn State
(198) 1979 Florida State vs (315) 1998 Air Force
(59) 1988 Florida State vs (454) 1979 Washington
