Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(73) 1998 Ohio State - 38
(1976) 1996 Toledo - 9
The Buckeyes would have been better served scrimmaging themselves because Gary Pinkel's Rockets were no match. CB Antoine Winfield and the defense held Toledo to just three field goals.

(952) 1990 Toledo - 27
(1097) 2000 UTEP - 24
Nick Saban found a way to advance another Toledo team to the second round. UTEP QB Rocky Perez had the passing game sizzling out of the gate, as he found TE Brian Natkin and WR Lee Mays for a touchdown apiece in the first quarter. But the Rocket defense buckled down in the second half. QB Kevin Meger hit WR Rick Isaiah in the end zone with 7:44 to play to give Toledo a 27-24 lead, their first of the game.

(585) 1990 Auburn - 22
(1464) 1982 Illinois - 19
Mike White's up-and-coming Fighting Illini fell short in their comeback attempt. Mike Bass missed a long game tying field goal in the final minute that could have sent the game to overtime. The Illini defensive line, anchored by Don Thorp and Mark Butkus, did a wonderful job shutting down Auburn's James Joseph and the running game. But Illinois QB Tony Eason took too long to get warmed up. And of course, it wouldn't be an Auburn game without some Aubie highlights.

(440) 2003 Tennessee - 30
(1609) 1979 West Virginia - 14
"Alexander the Great" (WVU RB Robert Alexander) didn't have many running lanes against Kevin Simon and the Tennessee defense. The Vols took the field with all eyes on Alexander, and rolled to an easy first round victory.

(329) 2001 Maryland - 36
(1720) 1999 Notre Dame - 21
Notre Dame QB Jarious Jackson turned the ball over three times and wasn't on his game all day. Ralph Friedgen's first Maryland team played a fatastic game all around. Bruce Perry paced the offense with 180 yards and E.J. Henderson did his part against the Irish option offense.

(696) 1982 Oklahoma - 26
(1353) 2003 Georgia Tech - 15
Oklahoma RB Marcus DuPree broke free on two long touchdown runs against Georgia Tech's aggressive, gambling defnese, and the Oklahoma D held RB P.J. Daniels to just 56 rushing yards. D-Lineman Rick Bryan dominated the line of scrimmage for the Sooners, getting after Daniels and Freshman QB Reggie Ball before they even knew what hit them.

(841) 1981 Arkansas - 27
(1208) 1982 North Carolina State - 16
Lou Holtz got the better of Monte Kiffin in this matchup. Razorback DL Billy Ray Smith made 5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and RB Gary Anderson paced a conservative Hog offense that did only what it needed to advance.

(184) 1994 Florida - 45
(1865) 1994 Wyoming - 16
The Gators shut down Joe Tiller's high powered offense and scored at will on the Cowboys in this first round rout. Ryan Christopherson had very little room, thanks to plays like this one by Florida LB Monte Grow.

(201) 1990 Notre Dame - 35
(1848) 2005 Navy - 24
Navy QB Lamar Owens executed the triple option to perfection, but the Midshipmen defense couldn't matchup with the speed of Raghib Ismail.

(824) 2000 Western Michigan - 29
(1225) 2003 Boston College - 17
Derrick Knight ran for 171 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights, but BC's defense couldn't hold up. QB Jeff Welsh threw for 264 yards and RB Robert Sanford tacked on 134 yards on the ground in the Broncos first round win.

(713) 2003 Minnesota - 30
(1336) 2006 Arizona - 17
After QB Willie Tuitama was injured in the first quarter, Arizona simply couldn't keep up with the Golden Gophers. Minnesota ran for well over 300 yards in the game thanks to the dynamic duo of Marion Barber and Laurence Maroney. Thomas Tapeh even chipped in 64 yards on the ground!

(312) 1993 Texas A&M - 31
(1737) 1988 Army - 14
The Aggies cruised past their first round opponent on the strength of the Wrecking Crew defense and a potent running game. Sam Adams dominated the undersized Army O-Line and contained RB Mike Mayweather. Mayweather was just glad to be a part of the tournament though.

(457) 1989 Penn State - 28
(1592) 1985 Purdue - 16
Purdue QB Jim Everett hooked up with WR Rodney Carter for a 70-yard touchdown in the second quarter, but managed very little else offensively against a stout Penn State defense. After the game, Everett took out his frustrations on a Los Angeles radio show host.

(568) 2008 Oregon State - 28
(1481) 2006 Utah - 21
In a tie game with just seconds remaining, the Utah defense simply gave Beaver QB Lyle Moevao too much time. Moevao found Sammie Stroughter in the end zone for the game winning touchdown. Safety Eric Weddle paced the Ute defense in a stellar performance up to that point, containing Oregon State's speedy Rodgers twins thoughout the game.

(969) 1989 South Carolina - 22
(1080) 1986 North Carolina - 23
Not a lot of passing going on in this game. Derrick Fenner and Eric Starr out-rushed Harold Green and Mike Dingle to give North Carolina the win over South Carolina.

(56) 2006 Louisville - 40
(1993) 1981 Purdue - 13
Bobby Petrino's offense scored at will against the outmatched Boilermakers. QB Brian Brohm had plenty of time to throw, and he found Harry Douglas on two long touchdown passes.
