RESULTS - BRACKET 21
Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(21) 1991 Washington - 52
(2028) 1997 Wake Forest - 7
1991 Washington is good - just ask Rich Brooks. Wake defenders DaLawn Parrish and Dustin Lymon had no hope of keeping up with the high powered Husky offense.

(1004) 1994 Notre Dame - 21
(1045) 1977 Iowa State - 20
Notre Dame barely slipped by Dexter Green and Iowa State in this first round matchup. Notre Dame freshman QB Ron Powlus had a rough day, but I'm sure he's still on his way to two Heisman Trophies.

(533) 1986 Texas A&M - 35
(1516) 1999 Louisville - 24
John L. Smith's porous Louisville defense gave up big chunks of yards to the Aggie running game (FB Roger Vick & RB Keith Woodside) all day.

(492) 1992 Colorado - 27
(1557) 1986 Hawaii - 17
The hardest step for Hawaii was the first one. Kordell Stewart and Koy Detmer each played at quarterback as the Buffaloes eliminated Dick Tomey's Rainbow Warriors. Aloha.

(277) 1988 Auburn - 28
(1772) 1984 Utah - 12
All American defensive lineman Tracy Rocker led the Auburn defense in a dominating performance. Utah's freshman RB Eddie Johnson was held to just 54 rushing yards. And you KNOW Aubie was in attendance.

(748) 1997 Southern Miss - 23
(1301) 1978 Auburn - 17
Get ready for some late 90s/early 00s Southern Miss - there's THREE of them in this bracket! The '97 edition, featuring WR Sherrod Gideon and CB Patrick Surtain eliminated RB Joe Cribbs and the '78 Auburn Tigers.

(789) 2003 Southern Miss - 22
(1260) 2003 Fresno State - 17
This time it was linebackers Michael Boley and Rod Davis who led another Southern Miss team into the second round. They were able to contain Fresno's explosive tailback Dwayne Wright in this defensive struggle. Marvin Young returned a punt for touchdown for USM in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory.

(236) 1991 Syracuse - 33
(1813) 1994 UNLV - 16
Versatile Qadry Ismail had too much speed for the UNLV defense. Ismail scored a touchdown three different ways (receving, rushing, punt return) in the rout.

(149) 1990 Texas - 33
(1900) 2003 Syracuse - 16
Peter Gardere found each of the Cash twins, Kerry and Keith, on touchdown passes in the first half to propel one of the best non-Mack Brown Texas teams in the tournament on to the second round. Stanley Richard helped bracket Syracuse WR Johnnie Morant throughout the game as Texas succeeded in keeping the big receiver out of the end zone.

(876) 2006 Cincinnati - 22
(1173) 1980 UNLV - 25
QB Dustin Grutza threw an interception to Charles Jarvis, who returned it 56 yards for the game winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to give the Runnin' Rebels the minor upset.

(661) 1987 Penn State - 23
(1388) 1996 Clemson - 18
Penn State RB Blair Thomas was the only player that moved the chains for either team in this ugly first round match. Each defense picked up a safety in the ball game, but Thomas was able to reach the end zone three times for the Nittany Lions.

(364) 1991 Texas A&M - 30
(1685) 1978 Colorado - 12
The Wrecking Crew was all they were advertised to be. Linebackers Quintin Coryatt and Marcus Buckley shut down RB James Mayberry and the Colorado offense, sending Coach Bill Mallory's Buffaloes home early.

(405) 2003 Iowa - 29
(1644) 1998 Mississippi - 14
The Iowa defense bottled up Romaro Miller, Deuce McAllister, and the rest of the Tommy Tuberville Ole Miss offense en route to advancing to the second round. Hawkeye defenders Bob Sanders and Matt Roth paced the stop unit.

(620) 2002 Texas Tech - 34
(1429) 1997 Tulane - 31
Tommy Bowden's high scoring offense wasn't quite high-scoring enough against Mike Leach's Texas Tech. Kliff Kingsbury out-gunned Shaun King in this shootout, but I have a feeling the '98 Tulane team might stick around longer than the '97 edition.

(917) 2000 Southern Miss - 27
(1132) 1981 Florida State - 17
The third Southern Miss team of the bracket advances, handing Florida State their first loss of the tournament. The 'Noles were 13-0 in The Greatest Tournament of All Time prior to this contest. This time it was the running of Derrick Nix and Dawayne Woods pacing the Golden Eagles.

(108) 2008 Oklahoma - 53
(1941) 1993 Western Michigan - 17
Bob Stoops did some showing off against Al Molde's Western Michigan squad as they tried to re-establish their dominance in this tournament. Stoops had Sam Bradford throwing the ball well into the fourth quarter, despite the game having been decided long before. After the game, Stoops was as humble as ever...
