SECOND ROUND-Bracket 4

RESULTS - BRACKET 4
Round 2
(seed) year school - score

I actually got a highlight and this is a very good Wilcat Team.
(125) 1977 Kentucky - 26
(900) 1986 San Diego State - 13

The Aztecs stumble in the second round and Wilcats make them wish they never made it. SD St QB Todd Santos was completely a non factor with 5-25 50 yards 4 interceptions. Kentucky DB's Larry Carter, Mike Siganos and Dallas Owens all had a interception and DE Richard Jaffe had 2 forced fumbles. Mobile Kentucky QB Derrick Ramsey was to much as he rushed for 172 and 2 TD and also threw for a TD to WR Felix Wilson. Clearly a overmatch in this one. Stat Line: DL Art Still 15 tackles 4 TFL's 2sacks

(637) 2000 Colorado State - 26
(388) 1984 Maryland - 27

The game was in hand for 3 1/2 quarters and some late mistakes by the Terrapins backups really make this score alot closer then it was. The score at halftime in this game was 21-0 and everything was going the Terrapin way. QB Frank Reich threw for 310 and 3 TD's to a variety of Recievers(WR Aziz Abdur-Ra'oof, WR Greg Hill, TE Ferrell Edmonds, all had at least one reception) and the tandem backs Rick Badanjek and Alvin Blount rushed for a 175 combined. Maryland rested the majority of their starters halfway thru the 3rd and made Bobby Ross very nervous late in the game.

(381) 1985 Maryland - 28
(644) 1996 Northwestern - 21

Another almost identical team from the one I just wrote up, but this game was a track meet. It started out with the team trading long passes to set up the game as Maryland QB Stan Gelbaugh to WR Aziz Abdur-Ra'oof and then NW QB Steve Schnur hit WR D'Wayne Bates to knot the score at 7-7 at the end of the 1st Qtr. After that it was the RB's as Maryland RB Alvin Blount sprung for a 21 yard gain to the 1 yard line and Badanjek pounded it in, on the other side NW RB Darnell Autry shook a loose arm tackle by DL Bruce Mesner to score from 42 yards to bring the halftime score to 14-14. Coming out of halftime Gary Barnett had the Cats pumped for the upset as Schnur hit Musso on blown coverage by Donald Brown and took the lead for the 1st time. It ended up being the last as TE Ferrell Edmonds ended a 80 yard drive with a 17 yard TD reception on a very controversial touchdown and on the ensuing Northwestern drive Maryland LB Chuck Faucette sacked Schnur who fumbled and DB Keeta Covington picked up the loose ball and scored in what would be the game winning score. Stat Lines: Maryland DB Al Covington 12 Tackles, 5 PBU, NW LB Pat Fitzgerald 11 Tackles 2 TFL 2 Sacks, LB Barry Gardner 8 Tackles 4 TFL's.

No Comeback Allowed
(893) 1986 Mississippi - 16
(132) 1999 Alabama - 24

Ole Miss QB had the Rebels thinking upset when he hit JR Ambrose with a 17 yard touchdown go take the lead at 16-7 lead. But the Bama defense decided to show up and Cornelius Griffin sacked Mark Young for the safety to bring the score to 16-9 then Shaun Alexander rumbled for a 25 yard touchdown and Freddie Milons ended the dream for the Reb's on a 77 yard run in the wildcat formation to close out the Reb's and on a second one a fumble on the extra point ended up forcing QB Andrew Zow to scramble and he found a wide open WR Freddie Milons for the 2 point conversion to add salt to the wound.

(253) 1992 Stanford - 26
(1277) 2005 Virginia - 17

In Bill Walsh's second stint at coaching The Cardinal, they were too much for the Cavs as RB Glyn Milburn was all over the field and too much for Freshman DE Chris Long and the Cardinal steps into the next round. Milburn ran for 137 and 2 TD's and was done by the 3rd quarter. Cav QB Marques Hagans was firing blanks all day and getting sacked 3 times by LB Ron George and picked off twice by DB's Darrien Gordon and John Lynch. Other stat lines: Stanford QB Steve Stenstrom 18-24 292 yards, Stanford WR Justin Armour 4-132, Cav RB Wali Lundy 14-45 2 fumbles.

(765) 1999 Texas A&M - 20
(260) 1995 Notre Dame - 27

This was a great game and came down to a late 4th down TD pass by QB Ron Powlus to WR Derrick Mayes to let the Irish escape with the victory. The game was tied at 14-14when Irish RB Randy Kinder plunged from the two to give the Irish the lead, but A&M KR Dante Hall got A&M back in it returning it 92 yards to even the score at 21-21. After that Irish KR Allen Rossum answered back returning the ball 52 yards to set up the winning scoring drive. QB Randy McCown was good all day but not great going 14-22 189. Other stats A&M WR Bethal Johnson 2-94 yards.

(509) 1996 Syracuse - 28
(516) 1988 Arizona - 20

The Desert swarm defense had this game in check into the 4th quarter but QB Donovan McNabb with his team down 20-17, scambled right and hit TE Steven Brominski for the go ahead score and the Orange move on. McNabb was held to marginal numbers 15-29 232 yards 2 TD's 56 rushing, due to the swarming Cat Defense led by LB Byron Evans who pick off McNabb in the Second quarter and returned it for a score. WR Marvin Harrison was smothered by DB Chuck Cecil and finished the day with only 5 catches. Cat DL Dana Wells also was a force causing McNabb to hurry all day and caused several incompletions, but McNabb did enough to win and the Cuse defense did just enough to preserve the victory.

Miami is Ballin'(Watch the whole thing this team is for real!)
(1021) 1988 Colorado - 10
(4) 2001 Miami - 35

Larry Coker's 1st Cane team really showed up and the fans were there in this one and they dismantled a very young Buffalo Team. All the great Buffalo players are here but as freshman and sophomores the inexperience really showed against this Cane team which some say is the best they have ever had. Miami QB Ken Dorsey hit Andre Johnson, who completely burned Deon Figures with a 15 yard score, but then the Canes went with the 3 headed monster at tailback, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, and Frank Gore on the bench. Wow. They were the story as they compiled 356 yards on the ground between them. As far as the Buffs offense Fr Darian Hagan was absolutely bottle up and Soph Eric Bieniemy had just 42 yards on the ground and they were smashed all day by DL William Joseph and LB's DJ Williams and LB Johnathan Vilma who combined on the day for 36 tackes 12 TFL 8 sacks. Buff WR Mike Pritchard did not catch a pass all day and had bump coverage all day from DB's Philip Buchanon, Michael Rumph and Ed Reed. So your official blowout in this one. Other stats: LB's Alfred Williams and Kanavis McGhee 12 tackles, no tfls and no sacks.

(132) 1999 Alabama vs (381) 1985 Maryland

(4) 2001 Miami vs (509) 1996 Syracuse

Freddie Milons was awesome. But that '01 Miami team is loaded. I'd have to put them on the short list of favorites to win this whole tournament. Larry Coker owes Butch Davis a huge thank you.

Also, I miss Keith Jackson: "They just let 'em hang around. And they're not satisfied with the crystal; they're not satisfied with the silver; they want the family jewels!"
