Notre Dame barely slipped by Dexter Green and Iowa State in this first round matchup. Notre Dame freshman QB Ron Powlus had a rough day, but I'm sure he's still on his way to two Heisman Trophies.

This time it was linebackers Michael Boley and Rod Davis who led another Southern Miss team into the second round. They were able to contain Fresno's explosive tailback Dwayne Wright in this defensive struggle. Marvin Young returned a punt for touchdown for USM in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory.

Versatile Qadry Ismail had too much speed for the UNLV defense. Ismail scored a touchdown three different ways (receving, rushing, punt return) in the rout.

Peter Gardere found each of the Cash twins, Kerry and Keith, on touchdown passes in the first half to propel one of the best non-Mack Brown Texas teams in the tournament on to the second round. Stanley Richard helped bracket Syracuse WR Johnnie Morant throughout the game as Texas succeeded in keeping the big receiver out of the end zone.

QB Dustin Grutza threw an interception to Charles Jarvis, who returned it 56 yards for the game winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to give the Runnin' Rebels the minor upset.

Penn State RB Blair Thomas was the only player that moved the chains for either team in this ugly first round match. Each defense picked up a safety in the ball game, but Thomas was able to reach the end zone three times for the Nittany Lions.

Tommy Bowden's high scoring offense wasn't quite high-scoring enough against Mike Leach's Texas Tech. Kliff Kingsbury out-gunned Shaun King in this shootout, but I have a feeling the '98 Tulane team might stick around longer than the '97 edition.
