(220) 2001 Texas - 20
Major Applewhite's senior year wasn't what it could have been if he had actually gotten to play. Chris Simms' interceptions finally got the best of the Longhorns against 1980 Pittsburgh. Please exercise caution while watching the following video - you may experience bleeding from the ears...
(165) 1987 Auburn - 17
(92) 1979 Houston - 15
The Houston backfield of QB Delrick Brown and RB Terald Clark were shut down by a stout Auburn defense.
(37) 1980 Pittsburgh - 21
(165) 1987 Auburn - 14
Two fantastic defenses took the field in the Bracket 37 Final, but it was Jackie Sherrill's Pitt that got the best of Pat Dye's Auburn.
Sophomore Dan Marino got the start for Pitt ahead of senior Rick Trocano, and he made that move pay off by throwing two touchdown passes in the first half.
Auburn answered each of those touchdown passes with scores of their own, though. Jeff Burger threw a touchdown pass to Lawyer Tillman and Stacy Danley added a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 14-14 at the half.
In the second half the defenses buckled down and took over the ball game. At one point there were five straight three-and-outs. For Auburn, Tracy Rocker picked up a couple of sacks while Ron Stallworth and Aundray Bruce locked down on the running game.
On the other side of the ball Hugh Green was a terror (as usual), but he had a ton of help from his supporting cast as well. Cornerback Carlton Williams picked off a pass and Bill Neill and Sal Sunseri contributed in holding Auburn to just 7 rushing yards in the second half.
Pitt finally broke the scoring draught mid-way through the fourth quarter when fullback Randy McMillan caught the defense off guard with a quick hitter up the middle for 40 yards and a touchdown.
1980 Pittsburgh (#37 overall seed) advances to the Bracket of Champions. The Panthers will face the winner of Bracket 28 in the first round.
