(86) 1989 Colorado - 32
(939) 1986 Florida State - 19

There are two Colorado Teams in this bracket and both of them are stacked. The 89 edition made quick work of a suprisingly FSU RB Sammie Smith was stonewalled all day against the great DT Joel Steed and LB combo Alfred Williams and Kanavis McGhee. They combined for 24 tackles and 6 TFLS and 5 sacks. On the other side of the ball it was Darian Hagen and Eric Bieniemy making it happen on the ground rushing for 283 yards and 3 TD's combined, 70 yards on pitch from Hagan to JJ Flanigan. The only thing that FSU could stop was DB Deion Sanders completely making the Buffs one dimensional but he cost them with a penalty and created that one dimension was more the LB Paul McGowen could handle. Also watch the toughness Deion has on his tackling ability.

(598) 1990 Louisville - 18
(427) 1984 Oklahoma - 19

This game was your regular ground and pound uneventful matchup, But with the only touchdown of the day it was a Keith Jackson TD in the 4th quarter that sealed it for Sooners. RB Lydell Carr had a decent day but he was constantly being rocked by Cardinal NT Ted Washington holding him to 59 yards on 14 carries. Louisville QB Browning Nagle was pressured by the The Boz(14 tackles, 3 tfls, 2 sacks) and company mainly in this one Tony Casillas(9 tackles, 4 tfls, 3 sacks) to only 3 trips to the red zone and no touchdowns for the day. It took a strong goal line stand for the Sooners in the end to preserve the victory. Key Stats: There was a combined 10 FG's made in this one. I think Browning Nagle is still playing.

(342) 1986 UCLA - 23
(683) 2006 TCU - 21

In another close game it took a late interception by TCU QB Jeff Ballard to UCLA LB Carnell Lake in the back of the end zone to give the Bruin the ticket to Round 3. This game was a lot closer then the experts thought. UCLA RB Gaston Green started out the scoring in the first quarter with a 20 yard run for a score, but TCU RB Lonta Hobbs answered back by taking a screen pass 36 yards to even the score at 7-7. Then QB Matt Stevens hit a wide open Flipper Anderson down the sideline for a 62 yard score, following that K Dave Franey kicked 3 FG's to give the Bruin a 23-7 lead at the half. The Bruin D stepped up big in the first half with LB Ken Norton really pumped up and Darryl Henley really controlling what TCU could do. At the Half, Coach Patterson really put a fire under the Frogs as DL Tommy Blake ran down RB Gaston Green forcing him to fumble and LB Jason Phillips recovered and ran 24 yards for the score cutting the deficit to 23-14. In the 4th after a couple 3 and outs by each team Lonta Hobbs broke loose again on a option and scored from 12 yards out to put the score at 23-21. The Frogs tried a onside kick and recovered it setting up the Ballard Interception in back of the endzone and the Bruin moves on.

(854) 1988 Georgia - 21
(171) 1989 Alabama - 27

In this classic SEC matchup it was sophomore Siran Stacy slicing thru the defense for the game winner to lock up the win for the Tide. This game was all about the backs as Siran Stacy ran for 172 yards and 2 TD's and Georgia RB Rodney Hampton had a great day with 135 and 2 TD's, but it was the electrifying Tim Worley to even the score at 21-21 before Stacy took the game over. Georgia DL Bill Goldberg said " It was like trying to catch a rabbit(refering to Stacy). Stat Line: LB Keith McCants 15 tackles 4 TFL 2 sacks.

(214) 1989 Illinois - 24
(1238) 2007 New Mexico - 14

How this Lobo Team made the second round I don't know but they were welcomed rudely by the Illni Defense and LB Derrick Brownlow and DB Henry Jones controlling the tempo all day, not giving any time to Donovan Porterie and WR's Travis Brown and Marcus Smith to do anything down the field. DL Mel Agee and Moe Gardner were a brick wall in the middle and the Illni D held RB Rodney Ferguson to 20-62. Offensively for the Illni it was smooth sailing as Jeff George thru 3 TD's (5 yard-RB Howard Griffith, 32- yard WR Shawn Wax, 26-yard WR Mike Bellemy) to help them cruise to a victory.

(726) 1977 Miami, Ohio - 20
(299) 1988 Wyoming - 31

In one of the most boring games to write up it was the Wyoming Cowboys led by QB Randy Welniak throwing for 280 yards and 4 TD's (3 to WR Freddy Dussett) to move the Cowpokes to Round 3. Miami Oh. QB Larry Fortner led Redhawks could not keep pace and he thru 3 interceptions that sealed the fate for his team in this one. Hopefully George and Company takes this team out in Round 3, but anything can happen in this tourny.

Did he Hold him?
(470) 1984 UNLV - 26
(555) 1978 Stanford - 27

If you could say that one player could will his team to victory it would be QB Randall Cunningham and that would have been the case in this one but a 87 yard that was tipped by 2 defenders ended up in Stanford WR James Lofton hands and miraculously got the Cardinal to the next round. QB Randall Cunningham had 270 in the air and a astonishing 201 yards on the ground, but it wasn't enough. Other Stat line: Stanford RB Darrin Nelson had 20-134 2 TD's.

(982) 2001 Utah - 17
(43) 1990 Colorado - 27

Since this is basically the same team as the one I wrote up above it is about the same outcome except for enter WR Charles "5th down" Johnson who tookover this game with 12 catches for 162 yards and 3 TDs. Utah QB Lance Rice had absoulutely no time and the Utes scored twice on errors by the Buff offense, but other then those errors, which were costly, that was the only thing the Buffs did wrong. Buff DB Deon Figures picked off Rice 3 times and LB Greg Biekert forced 2 fumbles. The score at the half was 21-10 and it was on cruise control from that point.

(85) 1985 Penn State - 21
(1109) 1997 Ohio - 14
Jim Grobe's option attack, led by QB Kareem Wilson and RB Steveland Hookfin, came roaring out of the gate with an 83-yard touchdown drive to start the game. But Penn State defenders Shane Conlan (LB) and Michael Zordich (SS) buckled down and held the Bobcats in check the rest of the game.

(597) 1998 Missouri - 34
(428) 1984 South Carolina - 31 (2 OT)
Much like the regular season in 1984, in which the Gamecocks started 9-0 only to finish 10-2, South Carolina jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in this game and looked to be well on their way to advancing, only to see it all slip away with a sloppy finish. Corby Jones proved why he was one of the most underrated quarterbacks of the 90s by putting together a whale of a second half. Jones found WR Kent Layman in the end zone twice in the fourth quarter, sending the game to overtime. Then his 25-yard touchdown run on the first play of Missouri's possession in the second overtime gave Missouri the upset win, sending Larry Smith's Tigers to the Round of 512.

(341) 1984 Boston College - 30
(684) 2004 Ohio State - 24
The 2004 Ohio State team was an odd mix of talent and youth, and both were on display in their second round loss to Doug Flutie and BC. Talented freshman QB Troy Smith was suspended, so Justin Zwick took the snaps for the Buckeyes. He performed well, finding Anthony Gonzalez and Ted Ginn (another talented freshman) on touchdown passes, but was obviously outshined by his counterpart Flutie. Flutie threw for 363 yards and 4 touchdowns, but it was his game winning 48-yard "hail mary" touchdown pass to Gerald Phelan as time expired with the game tied at 24 that will be remembered as one of the highlights of the tournament.

(853) 1984 Clemson - 17
(172) 1979 Ohio State - 29
OSU sophomore quarterback Art Schlichter took control of the game early on, as per usual, and the Buckeyes kept Clemson at arms length the majority of the ballgame. Clemson's lefty QB Mike Eppley threw a couple of touchdown passes, but it was the inability of the Tiger defensive line (William Perry & Michael Dean Perry) to get to Schlichter that was their major downfall. Schlichter threw for 183 yards and ran for 76, while Calvin Murray added a long touchdown run of his own.

(213) 1982 SMU - 27
(812) 1992 Boston College - 18
Boston College got blown out of the building early by the "Pony Express", and was never really in the game. Eric Dickerson took an option pitch 60 yards on the first play of the second quarter, and QB Lance McIlhenny took it the last 9 yards into the end zone on the following play to give SMU a 7-0 lead. The Mustangs scored again on the next drive, this time on a Craig James 29-yard touchdown run, and they never looked back. BC's Chuckie Dukes had little to no success on the ground because everywhere he turned, SMU linebacker Gary Moten was there to make the tackle. Glenn Foley hit TE Pete Mitchell for a touchdown and two-point conversion in the closing minute to make the score look closer than it actually was.

(725) 1993 USC - 27
(300) 1998 Georgia Tech - 30
In an exciting second round matchup, USC's Johnnie Morton caught a touchdown pass and did the worm, Georgia Tech QB Joe Hamilton ran for over 100 yards, and WR Dez White burned Jason Sehorn for a 73-yard touchdown pass. A game that was destined to be won by whoever had the ball last was when Hamilton scrambled for a 12-yard touchdown run with just 22 seconds left to play.

(469) 1992 Nebraska - 33
(556) 2005 Texas Tech - 31
It was a battle of high powered offenses that employed contrasting styles. The Nebraska defense was a bit slow-footed at first in trying to cover WRs Robert Johnson and Joel Filani, but the Texas Tech defense was far too undisciplined to handle Nebraska's dazzling freshman QB Tommie Frazier on the option. The Nebraska "We Backs" made another successful appearance in the second round of this tournament, this time with Calvin Jones leading the way with 187 yards and 2 touchdowns. Frazier was the difference though, because when Nebraska finally found an answer to slowing down Mike Leach's offense in the fourth quarter (by sending linebacker Trev Alberts after QB Cody Hodges on nearly every play), Tech never found an answer for Frazier.

(1068) 1992 Fresno State - 27
(44) 2000 Virginia Tech - 43
It was the Michael Vick Show against a Fresno State defense that clearly wasn't used to the kind of speed Vick had on display. Vick ran for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns, and threw for 164 yards and another touchdown as the Hokies went up and down the field at will on the helpless Bulldog defense. Fresno QB Trent Dilfer played a solid game, avoiding the constant pressure from Nathanial Adibi and David Pugh to throw for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns, but it was clearly not going to be enough to keep up.

This of course sets up a dream QB matchup in the Round of 512, as Michael Vick will lead the 2000 Virginia Tech Hokies up against Tommie Frazier and the 1992 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Hook up your VCRs, or whatever people used in 1992/2000, because there will surely be plenty of highlights in that one.

(53) 2005 USC - 40
(1077) 1983 Arizona - 22
This game, much like the majority of games USC played in 2005, was never close. Even Arizona's two-time All American linebacker Ricky Hunley admitted after the game he'd never seen speed like USC's Reggie Bush (68 yards rushing, 108 yards receiving, and 136 punt return yards). The USC defense was also big early, with Lawrence Jackson and Frostee Rucker combining for four sacks of Arizona QB Tom Tunnicliffe in the first half.

(565) 1996 Notre Dame - 25
(460) 1981 Washington - 18
Notre Dame's Allen Rossum returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to set the pace, and Ron Powlus and Autry Denson continued the momentum with a touchdown drive on the next possession to give the Irish an easy 14-0 lead. You can never count a Don James Washington team out of it, though, and QB Steve Pelluer guided a comeback attempt that came up just short. With Notre Dame leading 25-15 with just over two minutes to go, James elected to send kicker Chuck Nelson out to attempt a short field goal to make it a one score game. He made the kick and Washington recovered the ensuing onside kick and had a chance to tie the game with a touchdown. But safety Benny Guilbeaux picked off Pelluer's second pass of the drive, squashing the comeback attempt.

(309) 2007 Virginia Tech - 19
(716) 1994 Washington State - 12
Defense was the name of this game, as both teams picked up a safety in the ball game. Virginia Tech's swarming defense, led by linebackers Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi, didn't allow QB Chad Davis and the Cougar offense to reach the end zone once. On the other side of the ball, Washington State bookends DeWayne Patterson and Dwayne Sanders sacked Hokie QB Sean Glennon three times in the opening two drives, and forced a bad throw that was picked off by LB Mark Fields and returned for the Cougars lone touchdown of the day. With Washington State leading 9-3 at halftime, Frank Beamer elected to go with Tyrod Taylor at quarterback in the second half. The freshman did not disappoint. His elusiveness kick-started the offense as he managed two impressive touchdown drives in the third quarter to send Virginia Tech to the Final 512.

(821) 1993 California - 23
(204) 2000 Florida - 34
The Pac-10 in the early 90s wasn't known for its defense, and this game was no exception. Steve Spurrier's offense exploited Jerrod Cherry and the porous Cal defense, even though he rotated quarterbacks Rex Grossman and Jesse Palmer on nearly every play. Reche Caldwell caught two touchdown passes, one from each quarterback, and Jabar Gaffney had 11 catches for 104 yards. The Gators cruised - click clack.

(181) 1977 Arkansas - 26
(844) 1979 Tulane - 13
Larry Smith's second team in this bracket (see 1983 Arizona above) fell to Lou Holtz's second team in the bracket (see 1996 Notre Dame above) in this uneventful second round matchup. Arkansas was content to let kicker/punter Steve Little do the bulk of the work. Little was up to the challenge, kicking four field goals and pinning QB Roch Hontas and the Tulane offense deep in their own territory on punts many times throughout the day.

(693) 2007 Illinois - 24
(332) 2004 Tennessee - 27
This highly entertaining game was a decidedly ground-oriented affair. Illinois RB Rashard Mendenhall pierced the talented Tennessee defense for 145 yards rushing, while Tennessee duo Gerald Riggs and Cedric Houston each topped the century mark. The Vols had to stay with the running game though because quarterback Rick Clausen kept finding Illinois CB Vontae Davis instead of his own receivers.

(437) 1992 Hawaii - 28
(588) 1989 Texas Tech - 27
Hawaii coach Bob Wagner called a whale of a game against Spike Dykes and Texas Tech. With QB Michael Carter and RB Travis Sims running the option time after time, the Hawaii offense was able to lull the Red Raider defense to sleep. So when Carter ran down the line late in the fourth quarter and then popped back in the pocket, he found a wide open Darrick Branch on a 52-yard touchdown pass.

(949) 1995 Colorado State - 19
(76) 1993 Auburn - 30
Even though the 1993 Auburn team was on probation, barring them from bowl games and television appearances, we were still able to grab some footage of this game from the stands. Running back James Bostick ran for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns, including this 70-yarder that broke the game open in the second quarter. Sophomore QB Moses Moreno flashed moments of brilliance for Colorado State, but they were few and far between against a solid Auburn defense.

Swarming Defense.
(109) 1990 Miami - 31
(916) 2007 Connecticut - 16

Donald Brown the Star of UConn got the team started with a opening drive run of 40 yards for a score, that had the Canes wondering if upset was on the menu. But that was the last time the Huskies found the endzone and the Overmatch was in effect as the Cane Defense and QB Craig Erickson then went on a 31-3 scoring rampage. Craig Erickson had touchdowns of 50(Lamar Thomas), 32(Randall Hill) and 72(Wesley Carroll) and the starters were done at the half. The Cane Defense was swarming all day and QB Tyler Lorenzen had no time and Donald Brown was limited to 47 yards. DL Russell Maryland tipped a Lorenzen duck and LB Michael Barrow went 15 yard for Defensive TD. The Huskies had no chance here. Other Stat Lines: LB Darrin Smith 12 tackles, 5 tfls 3 sacks, LB Maurice Crum 8 Tkl 1 tfl 2 sax,DB's Ryan McNeil and Darryl Williams held the Huskies to 62 yards passing, Also in the shadow of Donald Brown, Cane RB Stephen McGuire ran for 120 yards.

Play of the Game
(621) 2007 South Florida - 36
(404) 1995 Texas - 39 (2 OT)

This game is a perfect example of why these matchups are great and this one did not disappoint. And it answers a question is a mid major team as good as a dominant team 12 years ago....USF looked like it would be but here's what happened. At the beginning of this game it looked like the Longhorn's were in trouble when Ricky Williams left the game with a ankle issue, but Shonn Mitchell came in and plunged for the 1 yard score. USF QB Grothe and RB Mike Ford had 10 straight rushing plays to knot the score at 7-7. After that the Ricky Show was back in effect as Mr. Williams ran for 3 scores and finished the day with 248 yards. The USF defense featuring DE George Selvie, LB's Tyrone McKenzie and Ben Moffitt were being manhandled by the Longhorns OL. So with the score 29-14 in the 3rd quarter all looked lost for the Bulls, but that's when Grothe used his arm and hit WR Taurus Johnson for a 33 yard touchdown and on the ensuing kickoff KR Bryant Westbrook was leveled by SS Carlton Williams and forced a fumble which set up Grothe to WR Jessie Hester and the two point was converted and it was knotted up at 29-29 which stayed that way until OT. USF got the ball first and Grothe rushed 5 straight times to give the Bulls the 36-29 lead. When Texas got it was QB James Brown and his legs on a 11 yard scamper to tie the game back up at 36-36. On the play of the game Grothe passed to Taurus Johnson who was leveled by CB Bryant Westbrook(who fumbled earlier) and DL Tony Brackens was around the ball and picked it off. After that it was up to Phil Dawson who hit 4-4 FG on the day including the game winner. Great Game! Other Stat Lines: Texas Mike Adams 3-102(2 over 40, two over 20), QB Matt Grothe 137 passing 120 rushing,

Great Catch but not enough
(365) 1979 Penn State - 17
(660) 1977 Clemson - 15

In a game that was one in the trenches it was a 42 yard FG by Herb Menhardt to close out the Tigers and one of only 2 Charley Pell coached Clemson teams in the Tournament. Clemson QB Steve Fuller was held in check all day by LB Lance Mehl(14 tck, 2 tfl), one of Fuller's only highlights was captured by a circus catch by WR Jerry Butler for a 25 yard score. Penn State on the other hand was very methodical and was basically run right with RB Curt Warner or run left with Matt Suhey which really forced Clemson DB's Eddie Geathers and Rex Varn to cheat up, and on a fake pitch it was QB Dayle Tate hitting WR Tom Donovan to set up the winning FG. Stat Line: PSU DL Bruce Clark 7 tkl 4 tfl 3 big sacks on 3rd down.

(1172) 2001 Texas Tech - 20
(148) 1988 UCLA - 33

The Tech spread offense with all its glitz comes into this game with a lineup featuring QB Kliff Kingsbury, HB Ricky Williams, WR Wes Welker, WR Carlos Francis, WR Nehemiah Glover, WR Mickey Peters which on paper seems like whoever they are playing don't have a chance. But as this game progressed it was the ones on the otherside of the ball that made the Raiders re-evaluate the spread offense. It seemed that every other play Kingsbury was throwing the ball away or being pressured by LB's Marvcus Patton or Carnell Lake which combined for 21 tkl, 6 tfls and 5 sax. Which sounds like they were the story, but look at the level behind them and you got the headline as DB's Darryl Henley, Marcus Turner, Eric Turner and Matt Darby controlled this game from the start. They were constantly bumping and bringing the lumber causing the very finesse WR's of Tech to hear footsteps. Also in a side story QB Troy Aikman connected with 8 different recievers and ended the day spinning the heads of DL Aaron Hunt and LB Lawrence Flugence.

(237) 1999 Marshall - 31
(788) 1999 Texas - 20
The Thundering Herd continued it's way thru the tourny and came back in the second half to move to the second round. The Longhorns led by a Hodges Mitchell 1st quarter 42 yard run took the lead of 10-7 at the half, but unfortunately for the Horns there was a second half. Marshall QB Chad Pennington started the scoring barrage by throwing for 3 touchdowns(one to Nate Poole, Llow Turner, Scott Pettit)and then Marshall DB Maurice Hines picked off Major Applewhite and returned it for a touchdown to seal the victory for the Herd.
Key Stats of the game:

(1300) 2005 Boise State - 23
(276) 1994 Auburn - 32

The Stephen Davis show was barreling thru the mid major Boise State as the Tigers out muscled the Broncoes. RB Stephen Davis rushed for 185 yards and 3 TD before he sat out the 4th Quarter. Boise St defenders LB Korey Hall and S Cam Hall were the only ones that were mentioned all day as QB Patrick Nix didn't make any mistakes and when he did pass it was the sure handed Frank Sanders on the recieving end with 11 catches for 128. Boise State QB Jared Zabransky couldn't use any magic in this one as he was held to 212 yards and 2 interceptions both by Chris Shelling. Other Stats:
Boise State RB Lee Marks 25 yards on 10 carries

(493) 2005 Notre Dame - 24
(532) 2000 Toledo - 31
Rocket, Rocket all of my Rocket Sauce! They have been Cinderella in this tournament and the dream continues as Toledo moves on. In Charlie Weis first season it started with a thud and this game wasn't as close as the score indicates as QB Tavares Bolden got the rockets out to a quick 24-7 lead by the half. Bolden was Golden and hit Donta Greene on a 72 yard pass on the first drive of the game and then again in the back of the endzone for a 2 yard score in the 2nd, Greene only had three catches on the day. Irish QB Brady Quinn the hyped QB going into this game, made two mistakes in the 1st half by trying to force the ball to Maurice Stovall and Rhema McKnight which proceed to bounce off his wideouts hands into the hands of Toledo DB Brandon Hefflin. Check out some of the key stats:
Irish:
QB Brady Quinn 21-34 238 yards 2 INT
RB Darius Walker 86 yards 1 TD
WR Maurice Stovall 5-99 yards
WR Jeff Samardzija 8-70 yards
DB Tom Zbikowski 11 tkls 1 INT
Rockets:
QB Tavares Bolden 11-18 270 yards 3 TD 1 Int
RB Chester Taylor 123 yards 1 TD 37 Rec Yards
WR Greg Grothous 3-87 1 TD
WR Donta Greene 2-74 2 TD
DB Brandon Hefflin 10 tkls 2 INT

(1005) 1978 Yale - 13
(20) 1978 Alabama - 27

The Tide rolled out to a 27-0 lead in this one led by HB Tony Nathan(137 yards 2 TD) and QB Jeff Rutledge(9-13 210 yards 2 TD's) accounting for the majority of the offense and the Steller Bama Defense gave the Tide great field position all day led by DL's EJ Junior, Marty Lyons, LB Barry Krause, and DB Don McNeal stifled the poor overmatched Yale Bulldogs, how they got to the second round I don't know but the reverse play worked once for them in this one leading to their only score. Check out the replay.

Round 2
(seed) year school - score

(34) 2004 Oklahoma - 32
(1058) 1988 Indiana - 19
Indiana got off to a fast start. Thanks to RB Anthony Thompson's two first quarter touchdowns, the Hoosiers actually held a 13-3 lead. But then Adrian Peterson decided to put Oklahoma on his back. Peterson busted off two impressive touchdown runs and Jason White added a touchdown pass to Mark Bradley for the win going away.

(546) 1984 Kentucky - 17
(479) 1981 USC - 21
The Kentucky defensive line thought they had a right to stop USC's Heisman winning running back Marcus Allen - but they were dead wrong. Allen scored all three touchdowns for the Trojans, accounted for 276 out of USC's 333 total yards, and touched the ball on all 12 plays of a touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter that turned out to be the game winner. Kentucky's main offensive weapon, RB George Adams didn't have much success against Chip Banks and the USC defense. But backup RB Mark Higgs managed to scrounge up 66 yards and a touchdown in the third quarter to give Kentucky a 17-14 lead.

(290) 1991 Nebraska - 26
(735) 1987 Pittsburgh - 16
Tom Osborn's option attack was in high gear in this matchup, and it had to be against a Pitt defensive line that featured Tony Siragusa and Marc Spindler. QB Keithen McCant seemed to always be a split second faster than the big disruptors in the middle, and spent most of the day pitching to the "We Backs", Derek Brown and Calvin Jones. Brown and Jones combined to run for 248 yards in the game. Panther RB Craig "Iron Head" Heyward squeezed in a highlight reel run, though, with his team trailing 20-3 in the third quarter.

(1247) 1988 Michigan State - 17
(223) 2004 Louisville - 38
After upsetting 1979 Rutgers in double overtime in the first round, Michigan State simply ran out of gas. They ran into an offensive buzzsaw in Bobby Petrino's Louisville squad. Andre Rison of Michigan State got the scoring started with a long touchdown catch from Bobby McAllister, but then Stefan LeFors took over. LeFors threw for 278 yards and 3 tds, and ran for a touchdown as well in the blowout win.

(162) 1997 Kansas State - 34
(1186) 2008 LSU - 17
Michael Bishop was incredible (as usual) in this second round matchup against Les Miles and LSU. Bishop ran for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns, and threw for 161 yards and a touchdown while running circles around Perry Riley and Rahim Alem. LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee never seemed to get comfortable against a K-State defense that brought the pressure all game. Lee threw a pick-six to Dyshod Carter early in the third quarter that broke the game open for the K-S-U Wildcats. Les Miles had high praise for Kansas State after the game.

(674) 1992 North Carolina - 19
(351) 1984 SMU - 24
Mack Brown attempted to run it down SMU's throats with RB Natrone Means, but Jerry Ball and Kit Case bottled him up in the first half. This development shined a bright light on UNC's rotating quarterback situation. Jason Stanicek and Mike Thomas both played about the same amount of snaps in the game, and neither one ever established a rhythm. SMU tailback Reggie Dupard and quarterback Don King paced a running game that accumulated 222 yards on the ground.

(418) 1991 East Carolina - 27
(607) 1977 Grambling - 33
This game might not seem like a second round matchup in The Greatest Tournament of All Time, but it actually featured an impressive quarterback duel. Doug Williams led Grambling to the Round of 512 with a remarkable performance against Jeff Blake and East Carolina. Blake threw for 334 yards and 3 touchdowns, but it wasn't quite enough. Williams was dazzling, throwing for 312 yards and running for 88. Everson Walls knocked down a hail mary attempt in the end zone on the last play of the game, preserving the win for legendary coach Eddie Robinson.

(930) 1977 Maryland - 10
(95) 2000 Florida State - 37
Florida State simply had way too much speed for the '77 Terps. Coach Jerry Claiborne tried to alter his base defense, which featured just three defensive backs back in the day, but they couldn't come close to keeping up with a Seminole receiving corps that featured Marvin Minnis, Anquan Boldin, Atrews Bell, and Javon Walker. Wow - no wonder Chris Weinke threw for 290 yards in the first half. Tay Cody added a pick-six for good measure, and even the walk-ons got to play significant minutes in this one.

(122) 1982 UCLA - 31
(1146) 2002 Oregon State - 21
Senior QB Tom Ramsey(280 yards 3 TD's) and RB Kevin Nelson(103 yards) did enough to hold off Pac-10 Rival Oregon State to get the 2nd Round Victory. Tom Ramsey was the story all day and was almost perfect going 11-11 at one point and only made one mistake on a interception to Dennis Weathersby. The final year Dennis Erickson led Beavers couldn't overcome the Bruin offense and a crucial fumble late in the game by Steven Jackson proved to seal the victory for UCLA. Beaver QB Derek Anderson tried to bring the Beav back late with a 45 yard TD to James Newsom but it wasn't enough.

(634) 1994 Tennessee - 19
(391) 1999 Mississippi State - 18
In another conference battle the Vols outlasted the Bulldogs by a late goaline plunge by RB James Stewart to get the upset. Freshman QB Peyton Manning had trouble all day with the Bulldog secondary as Fred Smoot and Pig Prather both had picks but the gritty Wayne Madkin tried to bring the Bulldogs back but a dropped pitch to Dontae Walker proved to be costly as Vol LB Scott Galyon came up with it and sealed the victory for the Vols ending the Bulldogs late drive and run in this tournament.

(378) 1984 USC - 20
(647) 1994 BYU - 19
In a great game the LB's of USC proved to be the difference sacking BYU QB John Walsh, who managed the game well(216 yards), 3 times on three straight plays on the final drive to end the Cougars hopes of moving on. LB's Duane Bickett(9 tackles 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble) and Jack Del Rio(11 tackles 2 sacks)caused havoc all day for Walsh. Call Duran Duran Rio was the story in this one.

(1159) 1996 Virginia - 16
(135) 1981 Miami - 21
Jim Kelly does it again and leads the Hurricane to second round, beating a very underrated Cavs team. The Cavs featuring RB tandem of Tiki Barber and Thomas Jones on offense were held to 120 yards and a controversial decision by George Welsh to start QB Tim Sherman, put the Cavs in a 14-0 hole early on. Two early Sherman interceptions by DB Ronnie Lippett gave the Canes the early lead and forced Welsh to give way to QB Aaron Brooks. Being 14 down Brooks lead the Cavs to be in the game late by hitting WR Germane Crowell cutting the lead to 14-7. Then The Cav defense stepped up with James Farrior forcing a fumble and cutting the lead to 14-10 at the half. In the second half it was all ball control by Jim Kelly, and early in the 4th quarter Kelly it Larry Brodsky with a TD in the corner over the head of DB Ronde Barber to complete the game and move the Cane to the Second Round. This Cav D was very underrated and how they went 7-5 that year I don't know(DE Patrick Kearney, LB Wali Rainer, LB Jaime Sharper, etc..

(250) 1982 Clemson - 26
(775) 1995 Washington - 17
This was one of two of the probation years for Clemson and this will be a team to watch out for. The rushing game was in full effect in this one as Clemson led by QB Homer Jordan and the RB pair TB Cliff Austin and RB Chuck McSwain carved up Huskie LB Jason Chorak for 320 yards rushing on the day. The Tigers had to go with a strong emphisis on the run per the Huskie secondary featuring Lawyer Milloy and Tony Parrish shut down the passing game which forced Clemson to run and run they did. This turned into a game in the 3rd quarter when Huskie QB Damon Huard hit RB Rashaan Shehee with a screen that cut the lead to 20-17, but on the next three Huskie Drives they were ended with turnovers, DT William Perry forced a fumble and two interceptions by DB Terry Kinard and one returned for a TD by LB Johnny Rembert completed the victory for the Tigers.

(762) 2008 Oklahoma State - 27
(263) 1992 Syracuse - 31
If you want offense you got it in this one. It was a track meet as Oklahoma St. QB Zac Robinson went up against the Cuse All Time Passing Leader Marvin Graves(don't mess with). Zac Robinson got the scoring started with the opening drive going 70 yards and hooking up with TE Brandon Pettigrew with a 15 yard TD Reception. Then Marvin Graves answered with a 40 yard screen pass to RB David Walker to set up the TD. The RB Twin Turbo then started up for the Cowboys as they handed off to Kendall Hunter, Keith Toston who combined for 248 yards which with those stats should secure the win, but enter Marvin Graves whose versitility led the Orange to the victory ending the day with 350 yards passing and 120 on the ground to will his team to victory. On the final drive though Zac Robinson(414 yards) tried to thread the needle to Damian Davis and the pass was tipped by Cuse DL Kevin Mitchell and led to a interception to secure the victory. Other eye popping stats WR Dez Bryant 11-142 TD, Cuse WR Shelby Hill 7-120.

(506) 1983 Iowa - 26
(519) 1984 Virginia - 21
For FG's by Tom Nichol including two late in the 4th secured the victory for the Hawkeyes. This game had a great QB matchup with All Time Passing leader for Iowa QB Chuck Long went up against the Magic QB Don Majikowski. Don Majikowski had a strong day but couldn't stay in tune and made a couple of crucial mistakes that were picked off by Iowa DB Davon Mitchell and S Mike Stoops, which gave the Hawkeyes great field position all day. Chuck Long really controlled the day, by directing the offense either by hitting WR Dave Moritz for the score in the 2nd Qtr or handing off to the three headed monster Ronnie Harmon, Owen Gill or Eddie Phillips. Clearly too much for the Cavs, despite one interception to Cavs DB Lester Lyles, Long had a terrific day throwing for 18-23 299 yards and 1 TD 1 Int. Also in this game the Hawkeye defense led by LB Larry Station shut down the powerful RB Barry Word by limiting him to only 15-60 yards.

What a mismatch as the Chippawas were fed to the Undefeated Canes and really had a rough time. This was over by the half as the Hurricane with QB Steve Walsh, and wideouts Sr WR Michael Irvin, Brian Blades, Brett Perriman, Randall Hill all were done by the half as the Canes rolled out to a 24-0 lead. CMU Curtis Adams the All Time CMU leading rusher was held to 4 yards. The Canes owned the CMU backfield and most of the defensive starters were done at the half, this team is deep with DL Greg Mark, LB Maurice Crum, coming off the Bench! Other notes: Bennie Blades had 2 ints, DL Daniel Stubbs had 4 Sacks. CMU way overmatched.

RESULTS
Round 1
(seed) year school - score

(26) 1997 Nebraska - 43
(2023) 1999 San Diego State - 14
Scott Frost executed the option to perfection and the Blackshirts shut down the Aztecs. QB Jack Hawley and RB Larry Ned could find no holes in the Nebraska defense because Grant Wistrom and Jason Peter blew everything up before it started.

(999) 1991 Ohio State - 24
(1050) 1984 TCU - 22
TCU RB Kenneth Davis had success against Alonzo Spellman and the Ohio State defense, but the TCU defense couldn't hold up at the end of the game when it counted. The Buckeye running game (RBs Carlos Snow and Butler By'not'e) got kicker Tim Williams in position to kick a game winning 32-yard field goal as time expired. Check out Kirk Herbstreit, the backup QB for Ohio State, in action:

(538) 1984 LSU - 30
(1511) 1989 Colorado State - 23
Dalton Hilliard rushed for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns for LSU against Earle Bruce (fresh off his coaching stint at Ohio State) and the Rams. LSU linebackers Shawn Burks, Ricky Chatman, and Michael Brooks did a good job containing CSU RB Tony Alford.

(487) 1995 USC - 26
(1562) 2005 Tennessee - 16
Tennessee fumbled the game away against Keyshawn Johnson and the Trojans. RB Delon Washington didn't find much running room against Kevin Simon and the Vol defense, but it didn't matter because Casey Clausen and the Vol offense couldn't put the ball in the end zone.

(282) 2005 LSU - 28
(1767) 1986 Georgia Tech - 14
The LSU defense was all over QB Rick Strom from the opening snap, including this LaRon Landry sack. JaMarcus Russell didn't get much opportunity to show off his arm, but he threw one touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe. Afterward, the Georgia Tech faithful were so disappointed they tore down the stadium.

(743) 1984 Ohio State - 31
(1306) 1997 South Carolina - 19
Check out this loaded Ohio State team. Keith Byars led the way with 110 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half, then the backups got plenty of work. On defense, Pepper Johnson and company bottled up RB Troy Hambrick without much trouble.

(794) 1985 Arizona State - 26
(1255) 2002 Fresno State - 17
Arizona State's defense led the way in this matchup with Pat Hill and Fresno State. Dan Saleaumua plugged up the middle, making it hard for Rodney Davis to find running room. All American safety David Fulcher had a pick six, and CB Eric Allen picked up another interception off QB Paul Pinegar, who looked shell-shocked most of the afternoon.

(231) 1980 USC - 27
(1818) 2003 UCLA - 10
In a highly anticipated matchup between All American OT Keith Van Horne and All American DE Dave Ball, Van Horne came out on top. He completely neutralized Ball's presence and RB Marcus Allen took full advantage, running for 142 yards on just 13 carries. The USC secondary (Ronnie Lott, Joey Browner) got the best of UCLA QB Drew Olson too.

(154) 1979 BYU - 39
(1895) 1992 Louisville - 12
BYU had no trouble dismissing Howard Schnellenberger and the Louisville Cardinals in this first round blowout. The Cougar defense had QB Jeff Brohm out of rhythm all game. Offensively, QB Marc Wilson and a stable of running backs (Homer Jones, Scott Phillips, Eric Lane) found plenty of room both on the ground and through the air.

(871) 1978 Southern Miss - 22
(1178) 1993 Michigan State - 19
Southern Miss advances yet another team to the second round, their 12th of the tournament. RBs Tico Beal and Sammy Winder (just a freshman) controlled the clock most of the way for the Golden Eagles, but Stephen "Batman" Holman had a solid day for the Spartans in a losing effort.

(666) 1993 Michigan - 28
(1383) 2004 Connecticut - 17
In a fairly uneventful game, Gary Moeller's Michigan Wolverines cruised past Randy Edsall and UConn. RB Cornell Brockington ran into Michigan linebackers Trevor Pryce and Jarrett Irons at every turn, but Dan Orlovsky had some success moving the chains with short throws.

(359) 1980 UCLA - 29
(1690) 2002 Air Force - 18
Chance Harridge went over 100 yards both rushing and passing, but the Air Force defense couldn't contain Freeman McNeil.

(410) 1982 Arkansas - 21
(1639) 1978 Western Michigan - 12
Arkansas had a decided advantage in the trenches, a hallmark of Lou Holtz teams. Billy Ray Smith made 11 tackles, three behind the line of scrimmage, and helped the Razorbacks shut down WMU RB Jerome Persell. Offensive guard Steve Korte paved the way for Daryl Bowles and Gary Anderson.

(615) 1980 Florida - 24
(1434) 2001 Troy - 16
QB Wayne Peace found WR Cris Collinsworth for two touchdowns, while LB David Little and the defense controlled Larry Blakeney's running game (RBs LeBarron Black & DeWhitt Betterson).

(922) 1999 Georgia - 25
(1127) 1977 Florida - 24
Jim Donnan's Bulldogs held on tight and fought off a furious comeback attempt by Doug Dickey's Gators. Once Florida adjusted to Georgia's speedy linebackers (Kendrell Bell, Orantes Grant, Boss Bailey) they were already in an 18-0 hole. Quincy Carter paced a steady, but unspectacular Georgia offense.

(103) 1992 Miami - 35
(1946) 1980 Arizona - 10
Gino Torretta threw the ball all over the yard, including two touchdowns to Lamar Thomas, and routed Larry Smith's Arizona club.

The pressure got to the Wolverines. With all 29 of the other Michigan teams to play so far in the tournament winning their first round games, it was up to the 1984 edition to pull off the upset and maintain the only perfect round by any school in the bracket. But alas, it wasn't meant to be.

(105) 1994 Alabama - 29
(1944) 1993 Iowa - 10
Easy win for Gene Stallings over Hayden Fry. Sam Shade kicked off the scoring by stripping the ball from RB Ryan Terry and taking it in for a touchdown.

(920) 2006 Nebraska - 27
(1129) 1984 Houston - 17
Zac Taylor threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one to Maurice Purify, to give Nebraska the win over Bill Yeoman's Cougars.

(617) 1980 McNeese State - 27
(1432) 2008 Miami - 18
McNeese State took advantage of several mistakes made by the young Hurricanes, including returning one of QB Robert Marve's 3 interceptions for a touchdown.

(408) 2005 Boston College - 30
(1641) 1984 Stanford - 16
Mathias Kiwanuka and the BC defense held Brad Muster and the underwhelming Stanford offense to just 199 total yards. WR Will Blackmon had a good game too.

(361) 1994 Michigan - 28
(1688) 1989 Kentucky - 17
Of course Michigan tailbacks Tyrone Wheatley and Tshimanga Biakabutuka got their yards, but it was the Wolverine defense who won the day. Led by linebackers Steve Morrison and Jerrett Irons, Michigan was able to shut down Kentucky RB Alfred Rawls.

(664) 1979 Notre Dame - 24
(1385) 1998 Texas Tech - 20
Notre Dame QB Rusty Lisch led a touchdown drive with less than two minutes to go to lead the Irish past upset-minded Texas Tech. DE Montae Reagor was primarily responsible for taking All American RB Vagas Ferguson mostly out of the game. Here's a clip from the Spike Dykes Show.

(873) 1980 Missouri - 25
(1176) 1980 Clemson - 14
WR Perry Tuttle made some fancy-dan moves on his lone reception, but the hard luck Clemson Tigers suffered some critical injuries on defenseand Missouri took advantage. Quarterback Phil Bradley (yes, THAT Phil Bradley) scored two touchdowns in the victory.

(152) 1979 Oklahoma - 35
(1897) 1999 Vanderbilt - 12
Barry Switzer's wishbone offense cruised past Woody Widenhofer's Commodores. OU RB Billy Sims ran for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns, and LB George Cumby took out Vandy QB Greg Zolman.

(233) 1987 UCLA - 35
(1816) 1981 Furman - 17
Oklahoma transfer Troy Aikman had a big day for the Bruins as they cruised past over-matched Furman.

(792) 2007 Penn State - 24
(1257) 1981 Oklahoma State - 14
Cowboy head coach Jimmy Johnson had no answer for the active Penn State defensive line, and Joe Parterno's Nittany Lions got the win. Ollie Ogbu, Maurice Evans and Company controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish. Could this be the start of a special tournament run for Penn State?

(745) 1990 Michigan State - 26
(1304) 1997 Western Michigan - 20
The Tico Duckett/Hyland Hickson duo combined for 222 rushing yards and were never quite contained by the Western Michigan defense. But the Spartans had to withstand a furious comeback attempt, picking off Tim Lester's hail mary on the last play of the game to secure the win.

(280) 2005 Alabama - 31
(1769) 2005 Colorado State - 13
Mike Shula's best Alabama team relied on its stout defense (LBs DeMeco Ryans, Freddie Roach) to shut down QB Justin Holland and the high scoring CSU offense, while the electric Tyrone Prothro lit up the scoreboard.

(489) 1979 Temple - 30
(1560) 1994 Texas Tech - 19
Who knew Temple was good back in the day? This Zach Thomas sack of Temple QB Brian Broomell was pretty much the only highlight of the day for the Red Raiders as the freshman backfield of Zebbie Lethridge and Byron Hanspard fumbled the game away early.

(536) 1988 Oklahoma - 28
(1513) 1983 Wyoming - 16
Freshman RB Mike Gaddis was the key component in Barry Switzer's wishbone today, as he led the way in ousting Jay Novacek and Wyoming.

(1001) 2006 Georgia Tech - 24
(1048) 1992 BYU - 23
Calvin Johnson had 10 receptions for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns in leading Georgia Tech to a first round victory over BYU, sending QB Ryan Hancock, WR Eric Drage, and RB Jamal Willis home.

(24) 1996 Florida - 52
(2025) 1989 San Jose State - 14
Steve Spurrier's Fun 'N Gun offense was in high gear thanks to the efficiency of Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel. Wuerffel used every one of his weapons (WRs Reidel Anthony, Ike Hilliard, Jacquez Green) in route to hanging half-a-hundred on Claude Gilbert's Spartans.
